I was raised in Syria among communities that were economically disadvantaged and had difficulties accessing health care due to the high costs of treatment and the absence of any Medicare system. The majority of people often consulted their local pharmacist when they were ill and took medications based off the pharmacist’s recommendations or their friends and family’s advice. Only a minority of people were able to afford visit to the doctor. People often died when put in a situation where their illness was treatable but too expensive for him or her to treat. The absence of any affordable health care was exacerbated during the war that broke out in 2011. The war placed the majority of the population under poverty, which made it even more difficult …show more content…
I believe that health care should be accessible to everyone regardless of his or her place of residence. I plan to devote my time and experience to serve disadvantaged communities in rural and suburban areas. I believe that my cross-cultural experience and interactions with people from all around the world through various volunteering, tutoring, and shadowing experiences makes it easier to relate to others’ struggles and health concerns. In addition, working and studying in San Diego gave me a firsthand exposure to minorities and underserved communities since the city is a center to many cultural and ethnic minorities. This affirmed my passion for dedicating my efforts and medical knowledge after residency to serve minorities and disadvantaged communities that struggle to access health care whether because of cultural or economic …show more content…
We first resided in New Jersey for a couple of months before we had to move to California because my dad could not find a job. I was enrolled in couple of college courses in New Jersey, which I had to withdraw from when my family and I moved to California. I received a letter grade for one course that I was allowed to take its final ahead of time, and “Ws” for courses that had restrictions on the timing to take their finals. This is reflected on my transcripts under the courses that I took at the Passaic County Community College in New Jersey.

Health disparities among Asian Americans tend to be similar to one experienced by persons of other ethnically diverse groups. When a person or population of people immigrate to a new country, language and trust will always be factors that may impede the transitions and overall health factors. Aside from language as a barrier, fears of deportation may also make immigrants, including Asian Americans, reluctant to obtain the health care they need. Along with a lack of health insurance, new ethnic groups face several health disparities when coming to a new country. It will take a community, in which ones own people (Asian Americans within the Asian community) become the care givers and medical professionals in order to win the trust and honor,…

Global health and social medicine have been a lifelong passion of mine. I believe that quality healthcare access for all is a basic human right and is key towards a happy and fulfilling life. As an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley, my experiences working as a caseworker in drop-in clinics for the low-income community allowed me to see that the best way to address complexities such as homelessness is to be creative, dynamic and attentive. My time spent in Kenya working with Voluntary Testing Centers and a Non-Profit Organisation rehabilitating street children, affirmed my belief of the necessity for quality healthcare access to all, especially for the communities that are the most vulnerable.…

Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. Despite major advances in medicine and public health during the past few decades, disparities in health and health care persist. Health disparities are prevalent in the United States and are significant among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (Mitchell, 2015). Compared to white Americans, these groups are uninsured or underinsured, have decreased access to care, and receive poor quality of care (Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality [AHRQ], 2013). Nurses can aid in reducing health care disparities through health systems interventions, cultural competency, and patient, provider relationship interventions.…
