Healthy Firefighters: Article Analysis

In 2015, 51% of firefighter line-of-duty fatalities were caused by sudden cardiac death. This is a staggering static that exemplifies the importance of health and nutrition within the career. Firefighters are well known for having poor eating habits, some say it’s due to the nature of the job which includes shift work and sleep deprivation, which can lead to unhealthy lifestyles. “Research that shows most firefighters get less than the recommended 150 min of moderate to high-intensity exercise per week.” Katie Miller published Meal Tips for Healthy Firefighters to help those who are looking for suggestions on having a healthier lifestyle through nutrition and exercise. The association is a non-profit professional organization that was created in 1978. The organization shares news for advancements in strength and conditioning around the world. “The NSCA has grown to nearly 30,000 members in 72 countries and become the leader in the research and education of strength and conditioning professionals.” These numbers could speak for themselves. If the organization was no reputable it wouldn’t have survived 38 years, or acquired so many members all around the world. Lastly, the organization also offers continuing education credits. In Miller’s tips, she not only touches on possible areas of one’s diet may be lacking, but she also gives suggestions on alternatives. She offers suggestions on meat selection, heart healthy oils, daily recommended amounts, how to keep snacking under control, and exercise recommendations. Her suggestions are easy to incorporate into a daily routine and are easy enough pointers that they will stick in one’s mind easily. If I am able to pass this article along to at least one firefighter in hopes they don’t become a statistic and potentially cut down the statics on cardiac line-of-duty deaths; I would consider my job to be
