This applies to several characters in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, especially Orleanna, Nathan, and their daughters. Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. From personal experience, however, success is anything that can make an individual feel content with the life the person lives, whether planned or not. Success is not required to be something that leaves a mark on the entire world; success can just be something that leaves a mark on you.
