How Far Will We Go to Keep Our Schools Safe? As a result of trying to keep our schools safe a new legislation has been passed that allows guns on school campuses. That decision has a lot of people questioning whether or not they made the right decision. For me they did not make the right decision yes, I believe that people have the right to bare arms but not in public places like school where kids are supposed to feel safe and not worry about firearms. There is a lot to consider when deciding on whether or not it's ok to allow guns on campus for one how will it affect our education. Another one being that majority of gun violence happens in the age group of college students. And lastly, how to really keep our school safe without the drastic measure of bring arms into school. Can you imagine being in a classroom and all of a sudden you notice one of your classmates across the room is carrying a gun? What are you going to be focusing on, what your professor is saying, or perhaps on the firearm waiting for somebody to pull it out and shoot? For me it would be on the firearm, not a lot of people have been raised around guns and the thought of having them around in the classroom makes me anxious. Not only that, but how are we as a society thinking that it's a good idea to arm our teachers expecting them to shoot their own students. It’s a terrible idea, since there is no evidence that proves that armed teachers save lives, as well as them not being trained to shoot and deciding whether it's appropriate to shoot or not. The article, “Arming Teachers Will Not Reduce School Violence”, by Rostron, Allen, and Brian Siebel states, “In one recent school year, 2,143 elementary or secondary school students were expelled for bringing or possessing a firearm at school. In how many of those instances would an armed teacher have been tempted to shoot the student because of a perception of danger?” We obviously don't know and would like to think that the teacher will do the right thing, but we can’t be sure of that, there has been instances where trained police officers have shot people they thought were dangerous but ended up not being. The article, “Mental Health Services a Defense against School Violence” by Robert Ross gives a good idea about mental illness, “Every school should have the resources it needs to provide comprehensive health services, where nurses, counselor, and other experts can diagnose problems, whether mental or physical, and get kids the help they need.” But we can’t only put all this responsibility on our schools, parents also play an essential role in developing thriving children as well. Days following the tragic shooting at Sandy Hooks Elementary the shooter was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The problem here is that, the guns don’t kill people the mentally ill do. If we concentrate more on mental illness and spread more awareness of the dangers of an untreated person we can stop school
