The Importance Of Gun Violence In Toronto

Good morning to you all! Before I begin my speech, I would like to thank Maryam for that wonderful introduction. The reason I am running for mayor is, growing up, I have tried many times to get involved, to make a difference, but no matter how hard I tried things kept going back to how they were before. If I were mayor, things would be different. Toronto would be a safer place to live. So far in 2015, the amount of shooting deaths and injuries are up by 58% compared to last year, to combat this shocking increase we have to address the fact that gun violence comes in many forms, and so, requires a variety of solutions. We need to: put a stop to the supply of guns to reduce the chance that dangerous people have access to guns, and that all legal gun owners are accountable for their guns we need strict controls. Toronto is a very large and diverse place, we need somewhere to connect with the people around us that is why I’d like to stress the importance of increasing the amount of community centers and city parks in Toronto. Parks and community centers allow Torontonians a common place to meet for recreation and exercise. People that live in communities with parks and recreation centers tend to feel a stronger sense of community than those that don’t, also, from these community centers information can be discussed about common concerns. The next concern I want to bring up is the fact that a very large amount of Toronto schools have no air conditioner. I know by personal experience that when schools don’t have an AC it becomes really hard to concentrate, much less learn, if I am elected, I will make an effort to pass a by-law that requires all schools in the GTA to have a fully functioning cooling system. Finally I would like to address the TTC or Toronto Transit commission, a few days ago I read an article about a woman named Asmait Abraham and her 12-year old son
