One of the main priorities for the Chicago Police Department that sees high numbers of gun violence is to take gun off the streets. This has been one of their highly focused goals dating back to the 1950s. In 2013 the Chicago Police Department was able to locate 6,813 guns, these guns were found by searching vehicles, individuals, homes, and some were left at crime scenes. Once these guns are in the hands of law enforcement officials they begin the task of trying to trace them back to where they were originally purchased. The trace is done with online databases where information is entered including the type of gun, the manufacturer, the model, its serial number and the caliber. These networks have the resources and the money to purchase these guns illegally and bypassing all the laws of background checks, waiting periods, and obtaining Firearm Owners Identification card. Gang violence is a problem throughout America in 2011 the FBI put out a report after doing a National Gang Threat Assessment. It stated that there are more than 1.4 million gang members that are active and more than 33,000 gangs throughout the country. In the two years from 2009 to 2011 the number of people with gang associations rose about forty percent. People opposed to stricter gun laws argued that instead of tougher laws, we should look into why these people felt the need to turn to gang association. The statistics show that forty-eight percent to ninety percent of violent crime in urban areas are related to gang violence. A majority of the gang violence committed in these urban areas involve a firearm. Gangs participate in crimes other than murder with firearms armed robbery, home invasion robberies, drug trafficking and distribution, assaults, and the illegal sales of firearms. In recent years gangs have begun recruiting within the military, there have been fifty-three gangs identified on United States military bases throughout the world. Military members who are associated with gangs learn skills in weaponry and combat that they take back to the streets when they are separated from the armed forces. A major threat to the people is that these military members that are also gang members have access to military grade weapons that they can steal from the military armories and put into circulation on the black market. Also in recent year’s gangs are encouraging members not known to the authorities, their family member and friends to get jobs in law enforcement to gain information on rival
