Growing up on Long Island I believe, is a gift. There's no other place like it, the beaches, the farms and the city it has it all. My favorite memories are from when I was little and my grandpa, on my dads side we call him dats, lived three houses down the block from us. He used to babysit my siblings and I. In front of his house he had a huge sweet gum tree that had a swing hanging from the tallest branch. America is divided by light and dark, when I believe it should never be divided at all. Being Irish and Italian today I don't face any discrimination like there was in the past, I really don't experience any at all. My hope is that history stops repeating itself and everyone in America can be viewed as equals but it seems like a reoccuring sense of ignorance that poisons our great country. Whether it's race, sex, or nationality american citizens always find something and discriminate. I thank my relatives from making the brave move to america in hopes for a better life and being let down or discouraged due to the discrimination. I thank them because if it wasn't for that I would never be able to live the life I do today, and I will forever be grateful for that and their

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

Today Little Italy is made up mostly of restaurants, shops, art galleries, and residential units. Furthermore, this neighborhood can be describe as a very energetic neighborhood, each month Little Italy hosted several events such as festivals, the art walk show, and a weekly farmers market.…

From hispanics to russians, this country has one of the most diverse population of any country. With the diverse population also brings different cultures and beliefs that help make people unique. But people still discriminate against these people with other skin colors, cultures, accents, or beliefs. Richard Rodriguez states in his work titled “Blaxicans”, “Race mixture has not been a point of pride in America.” Race is a point in america that should be taken in as a point of pride.…

New York otherwise known as the “Big Apple” is home to approximately 19.7 million people. In a closer lense, New York City is home to 8.4 million people. Everytime I go to New York I always spot the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center. For seven summers I went to Camp Matoaka in Maine, each year I would return to the same smiling faces. These familiar faces were always close to my heart, however they were not always in reach.…

Growing up in Brooklyn, in the early 90’s was one of the best experiences in my life. I remember the ice cream trucks, corner stores, fire hydrates being opened for the kids especially when there was a block party but most of all, the unity of families and neighbors. Many people will say “Brooklyn, only the strong survive” and I have lived by that phrase my entire life. It showed me the beauty of living in one of the boroughs that makes up New York City and has taught me to be a strong person. It’s not made for the weak.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…
