Decent Essays
Growing up as a young man my mother would always share with my brother and I her life lessons. At some point we were just hearing a broken record “the only thing you should be afraid of is god” ,“ always be honest and respectful” , “be an active listener” etc.. . However, we understood that the reason she would tell us these life lessons was to help us in life and do things she only wish she could have done. This is similar to most kids living in West New York. Everyone comprehends the struggles that our parents had to go through because most of them are immigrants coming from latin america for better lives and opportunities. None of us came from a wealthy family or have privileges that other american kids do have. However, this does not

The only thing worst than being a new arriving immigrant in the first half of the 1800s in the United-States was being a slave or servant. No matter which part of the country you found yourself in whether it be the North, South or West, as an immigrant you would be subjected to job discrimination, residential segregation, limitations on civil and legal rights... However, if a choice had to be made, I would have probably chosen the North because the thought of living in a state that hadn't abolished slavery like in the Southern states wouldn't be conceivable to me. Moreover, I wouldn't have lived in the West since the states that were being created there would have been too recently become parts of the Union and I would have most likely considered them…

Being born in an immigrant family my life is normal to me, but as I meet new people every day I realized that my family leads a different life. I never took notice that we always couldn’t afford the luxuries that my friends could, but I was okay with that. I never noticed that my mother 3 jobs to feed our family and my father worked all night just to pay the rent, I wasn’t okay with that. I did notice that they would tell me every night that I needed an education so I wouldn’t have to go through the same pain and labor. Even when I would get a bad grade or I would get tired from studying they would tell me that one day it would all pay off.…

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

working with Latino families especially immigrants is going to be my strength as a counselor. It will be easy to relate to them because of my own culture. At times, however, these same assumptions can create tension in my therapeutic relationships because some people do not fit my perception of issues in immigrant families. Instead I need to come with a clean slate and let the family fill me in before making any assumptions about them. While the need to prove myself could be a hard pattern of behavior to break, I believe in my ability to observe these thoughts in my interactions.…

Despite being mostly assimilated into the American culture and society, as an immigrant, we are still unwittingly guarding many of our inherited culture, religion and social values that we have learned while growing up. We, the parents tend to forget that our ethnicity and identity had a profound impact on our thought process and behavior, we tend to ignore that we have brought forward our parent’s value and social norms, and subconsciously trying to pass those to our children. Our definition of achieving success and gaining financial independence often do not coincide with that of the first…

Narrative Essay It was at the beginning of my senior year when my counselor started urging my senior class to start thinking about what universities we wanted to apply to. At the time, I did not know which universities I wanted to apply to or what were the differences between a Cal State, a UC, and a Private University. I did not even know about financial aid.
