Teachers can upgrade their knowledge and skills by doing in-service courses from the well-known institutes such as University of the South Pacific, Fiji National University, Fulton College, Kiribati Teachers College and Vanuatu Institutes of teacher education (Lingam, 2003). Teachers can also learn a lot from the school based professional development programmes that are carried out and by attending to the workshops organized by ministry of education. Now a days it is very crucial for teachers to upgrade themselves on how to use information and communication technology effectively since students are more advance then teachers in using the new gadgets like computers, printers, fax machines, photocopiers, iPods, mobile phones, internet and scanners. At times it becomes embarrassing to some of the teachers who are not well versed with the technology, for example, when they are asked to update their class or school information online that is Fiji education management information system (FEMIS). The changes were very much needed in the holistic development of the students. In the past years subject teaching was done in years one and two. They were taught all the nine subjects but recently it was changed from subjects to thematic approach. In the thematic approach students are taught the six foundation areas of learning and development. In this approach the freedom is given to the school leaders and teachers to allot the teaching time and prepare the timetable according to their own choice. It is a student centered approach where students express their views freely; participate actively in the group activities and presentation (Year 1 and Year 2 Thematic Curriculum Guidelines, p 10). Teachers are given the privilege to choose a theme of their choice, plan and prepare unit of work instead of scheme of work and teach one theme for two weeks where as subject teaching is done in years three to eight using learning and teaching programme as a replacement for scheme of work. Another change was removing of external examinations namely Fiji Intermediate Examination and Fiji Eighth Year Examination from the primary education system replacing it with Fiji Islands Literacy and Numeracy assessment. After a few years Fiji Islands Numeracy and Literacy assessment was and replaced by Literacy and Numeracy Assessment for years four, six and eight students (Fiji Education Sector Program, p 24).
