Current research (post 2005) seems to suggest that living in student accommodation significantly increases the chances of meeting new people, walking into social situations (meeting flatmates in the kitchen during mealtimes) and participation in social events such as parties, drinking games and movie nights. Some research also suggests that there may not be a significant difference between commuters and those that live at university in terms of social interaction and adjustment. Much of the research uses quantitative methods such as structured questionnaires. Some research suggests that holding down a job while attending university can significantly reduce the amount of time students spend working on their education. Some of the research also shows that working a certain amount of hours can affect you more. When working, students have less free time. This often means that instead of working on an assessment piece or studying they are often at a job or trying to fit in some social and leisure time. Research also shows that this lack of time means many students may resort to staying up late to finish pieces of work which can become detrimental to a person’s physical health. Much of the research uses quantitative methods such as questionnaires to collect the data. Some investigate the hypothesis that working reduces academic achievement by correlating the number of hours worked with academic performance.
Jasmine has been with her boyfriend for over a year and a half and claims that she has become a much more confident person since meeting him. Starting and maintaining a romantic relationship has been linked to an increase in a person’s self-esteem. Much of the research also states that a breakdown of a relationship can decrease a person’s self-esteem. A longitudinal study conducted by Luciano & Orth, 2016 used 9,069 young adult participants in 4 assessments over the course of 3 years. The study showed that when participants were single at time 1 but in a relationship in time 2, 3 or 4 many showed a significant increase in their self-esteem. This increase often remained or increased up to a year after the start of a relationship. The research also showed that when a participant was in a long term relationship at time 1 but not at time 2, 3 or 4 then many showed a significantly lower sense of self-esteem. Jasmine was not in a relationship before coming to university and felt very insecure. She often doubted herself felt that she was not worth the time of others. Since coming to university she has met someone and started a relationship with them. They have been together over a year now. Her confidence and self-esteem have grown significantly in the last year. She no longer feels worthless and doesn’t struggle with activities that may get her noticed.
