Beowulf was a great warrior that faced many physical monsters in his life, but that doesn’t compare with the inner demons that people face in their everyday life, such as depression, anxiety, and stress. This story was composed when England was transitioning from a pagan to a Christian culture. Reading through this heroic poem it is evident where the monks imbedded their ideals into this pagan story. Being passed down verbally through generations there were slight changes along the way, but still kept its heroic impact on the audience. Through three glorious quarrels displaying his battling nature you see Beowulf’s character transition.…

We are all motivated to do certain tasks in our lives. Most motivations for our own personal gain and personal wealth as a human being. In the book Beowulf, which is translated by Burton Raffel, tells the story of a young warrior who goes to a foreign land to fight a monster disturbing this village. The Anglo-Saxton code, mentioned many times in the Epic is code is loosely based off the saying; You are expected to do it, even if you don't want to do it. In the book, Beowulf helps the poor town of Herot get rid of the murderous monster Grendel.…

There is an unambiguous system of social contracts portrayed in the poem, Beowulf, and they are exemplified by the main character as well as secondary ones. Beowulf is the mighty hero who is beloved by all, just as all leaders were. Warriors were fearless and given riches on a golden platter. The people were obligated to remain faithful and inspired by these men. The foundation of the code of honor and the warrior culture is bravery and it is demonstrated multiple times through their heroic actions.…
Before Beowulf dies, he wants to see the treasure he has won (2747-49), which show the greedy side of him. Beowulf was buried with gold and treasure (2802-8), similar to how the ancient king Shield Sheafson was sent out to sea. These physical possessions are the pagan representation a king’s greatness, but they seem vain in the Christian’s point of…
Throughout the epic, Beowulf has various conflicts in his values and morals as a hero and as a human. Due to the fact that Beowulf is mortal, he is held to a higher standard than others due to his status as a hero. However, the hero is a warrior, so when he is victorious in battle that means his opponent has fallen. Even though Beowulf is a murderer, he is adored by the villagers and Hrothgar. As a victorious hero Beowulf’s actions must be found reasonable and fair.…
Generosity is displayed by Beowulf sharing his rewards and treasure with his king. Upon his return to Geatland, Beowulf could have kept the treasures to himself and his troops, but he shared them with his king, Hygelac. This act of generosity is showed when Beowulf states, “I was paid and recompensed completely, given full measure and the freedom to choose from Hrothgar’s treasures by Hrothgar himself. These, King Hygelac, I am happy to present to you as gifts” (p. 1680).…
Kings often rewarded their greatest warriors with material gifts as an indication of their appreciation for such fearlessness. When Beowulf returns to Geatland after defeating Grendel in the mead hall, King Hygelac presents him with a large piece of land, a luxurious home, and a sword previously belonging to his father who was king as well (L. 2190-2196). The king presents Beowulf with these material gifts due to his loyalty to him as well as his allies. This praise from Hygelac boosts the reputation of Beowulf in all of Geatland due to his prominent position as leader of the nation, which is supported by the treasured value of heroic…

By giving gifts two or more people could renew their alliance, strengthening them for battles ahead. Gifts were a way to symbolize the fulfillment of the heroic code, being able to pass treasure down to one's offspring or to spread it back into the kingdom. And the parallel that giving gifts in Beowulf translates to the modern middle ages where similar forms of payment take place to one day evolve into what there is…
