I was born and raised in the same apartment complex my parents met over eighteen years ago. I am the oldest of four boys and the first in my family to go to college. Growing up my mother was very protective of me. She would not allow me outside of the apartment complex on my own like all of the other kids. My mother would tell me stories about gang members being at the local recreational center. My friends chuckled when I told them this. The rules and limitations she set were not an issue for me. I was very introverted and afraid of the world outside of the gates that surrounded our apartment complex. By the time I was in third grade, school started to get more challenging. However, my mother knew no English whatsoever so the days where she …show more content…
EDLC is on its second cohort of student-leaders and I was hired a few weeks into college as the Leadership Programs Specialist with the role of developing and overseeing EDLC and other student-driven projects. Being now on our second year EDLC has developed a strategic plan for the next three years. We have six goals total with at least five objectives each. One of the goals in our strategic plan is to develop service projects outside of the country. The Fulbright Wales Summer Institute though not a service project is still an experience that I would want to share with the students. During the our meetings, as well as in my college classes, we have been discussing American culture and Latino culture, politics as an organizational framework, the role of industry in Barrio Logan, and lastly about how we want to create change. Looking at the structure and lifestyle of another country provides an experience that enables us to look at our own structures more critically in order to identify areas of improvement. Personally speaking, I have only traveled to Mexico a couple of times. That is as much exposure to another country I have

When I was younger, my mother was always very protective of me when we went into large cities. One time, she even kept me right next to her as we walked through Washington, D.C. in order to keep an eye on me and made sure I was not getting myself into trouble. But when we went to New York City this year, she just told me to check in with her from time to time so that she can check in.…

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

Senior Brag Sheet Career Choice: I plan to double major in mechanical engineering and finance, but still face some uncertainty in this plan. My interests developed mainly from the push of my parents. Ever since I was a child, the overarching career I was pushed towards was engineer or doctor, so I pushed myself to learn topics that would better support these ideas. Classes such as Scitech gave me an understanding of what engineers do which provided me with a great deal of interest. Other clubs such as Science Olympiad and TEAMS have also given me experiences that have fostered this interest in engineering with competitions and processes of creating something.…

Some of my biggest accomplishments have been achieved because of one honor I received years ago. At age 7 I was admitted into the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program. The TAG program is for unique students with an IQ over 120 who aren't being challenged by the school's typical curriculum. This program has presented some of the most delightful challenges and rewarded some of the sweetest accomplishments to my peers and I. The influence of the TAG program can be divided into three different factions: peer competition, challenges from my instructor, and diverse experiences outside of the classroom.…

Going on an international excursion would add more depth and diversity to my overall corps experience. It would allow me to apply, practice, and expand my current understanding of leadership in a real world setting. It would also give me the opportunity to learn about other cultures firsthand. When I was five years old, my mother decided that we should move in with her boyfriend. I did not know him; in fact, I remember not knowing anything about him at all. We moved into a house in a nice neighborhood, but living with my stepfather was exceedingly difficult at first because I was only used to having my mother to myself. Before moving in with him, my mother had raised me in a Hispanic community; now moving to El Paso, I had to get used to a very Americanized neighborhood. I struggled to get used to my new life in El Paso.…

The big challenge that I got through was getting through middle school all the way to high school without the support of my family. Most students get through high school with the support of their family. Their families helped them through tough times and school problems. I was the complete opposite of those students. All through middle school and up to current time, I was ignored and my family didn’t care when I showed them that I got a good grade on a test or that I was participating in some type of school event and I wanted them to come.…

You could have called me a sheltered kid, living in a tiny bubble, ignorant of the true nature of the world. I lived in a nice neighborhood, had a steady and loving family, and went to an excellent private school. Then, I made a decision that would provide more hardship than I had ever faced: Attend a military boarding school just 1400 miles away from home. From the second my head was shaved and I was being yelled to attention, everything that once had seemed normal ceased to exist. Everything about the school was a shock, from its environment to its atmosphere to its structure and discipline.…

Since the beginning of the Honors Program, we focused, as a class, on the many obstacles that can occur when attempting to achieve our educational and career goals. Among the many course materials that we read took a look at was the excerpt from Ethics for Professionals in a Multicultural World by David E. Cooper. Within the reading I observed that there are many more aspects involved with each particular profession that exists. These aspects include esoteric knowledge of the profession, the social values served by the profession, and a moral commitment to serve the professional ethical code as well as gaining and withholding the trust of their clients, also known as a fiduciary relationship. Along with these aspects, we also touched upon…

Effective leadership from all levels of the student affairs profession is essential to ensure that institutions of higher learning are proactive and productive in meeting the needs of all students. In addition, organizational, management, and leadership theories relevant in higher education settings are crucial components that cultivate the culture of any institution of higher learning. These three components influence how higher education settings operate. However, leadership styles set the tone of how an institutions mission is carried out. In my EPC 695s course, I learned about the different leadership styles, which include Transformational, Authentic, and Servant leadership.…
