In December of 2012, 20 first-graders and six adults were murdered in cold blood at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. If anyone can walk into an elementary school and murder innocent children then gun laws should definitely be stricter. The result of the massacre led to angry citizens and protesters all around. In January of 2013, a couple thousand people made their way to Connecticut’s statehouse for a public hearing. According to Barbara Mantel’s article, “Gun Control” people who advocated for their gun rights wore round yellow stickers with the phrase “Another Responsible Gun Owner,” and people who have had enough and supported gun control wore green ribbons. Some of the parents whose children were killed also joined. A parent whose 6 year-old was killed in the mass shooting seemed like he was advocating for gun rights after all the tragedy that had just occurred. He said, “I believe in a few simple gun laws. On the show it means the characters need to be able to utilize and control a firearm because zombies only respond to a bullet in their brain. Rick has taught many of the characters how to operate a firearm including his young son, Carl who has definitely been put to the test as well as his shooting skills. Throughout the series, the viewers have seen rifles, handguns, semiautomatics, and automatic weapons. The characters use these weapons in order to fend for themselves and their “family.” A knife may help when there is only a couple of walkers but it is not going to help when there is a herd of walkers surrounding them or another group that is coming after them such as the Governor and his soldiers.
