In 1829 Sir Robert Peel established 9 principles, these principle are used today to guide the minds of the 21st century police. After 200 years the principles are still the same but the there are many differences that have changed and evolved the police. In the 21st century there are many forces changing the police, such as police action to reduce fear and promote co-operation with communities, the new developments in technology, the deconstruction of old quasi-military policing and, the rapid growth of private security. Also the use of computers to allow for faster access of information as well as quicker and more efficient transfer of data. The rapid growth of the private sector changing how people protect themselves and their property, allows the police less work so they can handle more serious cases. These changes in 21st century has cause more of a reliance on private security which has shown the similarities and differences between the police and the private sector. This main difference is their principles, being that police have a duty to uphold the law and protect life while obeying the rights of the people in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. There is the consensus perspective which believes criminal law comes from the needs of society to stop and deter unwanted and harmful behavior. The consensus perspective also sees the police as peace keepers and protectors of society. The other perspective the critical perspective, this is the idea that the law and its officers should protect the interests of the powerful, that police are seen as ways to control the public. These two perspectives are both possible but in my opinion that consensus perspective seems more socially acceptable, if people were to believe that the law and police officers were influenced by the powerful and wealthy then it would cause unrest in today’s society. Although it could be possible that the critical perspective is right it is more likely that it was the consensus perspective that criminal law and police action originated from. This is because of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, it is the in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms that shows the police how to act towards citizens or criminals. Although some believe that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is too protective of those accused of crimes, it is not.
