Throughout his novel, The World is Flat, Thomas L. Friedman discusses the emergence of globalization, the impact globalization has on societies world wide, and his growing suspicion that citizens around the world are unaware of the presence globalization has taken up around them. Not only does Friedman discuss these things in his novel, but he also backs them up with facts and real life experiences—which he has had as he has traveled around the world to determine once and for all if the world is truly flat (not physically, but metaphorically). In fact, it would be fair to say that outsourcing has made a significant impact on world development, not only in already developed countries, but in poor, underdeveloped countries as well. Through outsourcing companies are able to branch out into foreign countries from their country of origin. This process of branching out allows companies to expand not only their physical presence, but also their name, reputation, and knowledge base. In addition, the process of branching out allows companies to look around the world and find the best suited locations to build factories, warehouses, and office buildings that will operate well alongside the area’s surroundings. Since this is true, products can be made cheaper, faster, and more efficiently all while keeping the salaries of employees low. Also, since companies can select where in the world they want to scatter their office buildings, customer service can be done at all hours of the day and night since the world runs on various different time zones. Henceforth, if a customer in the United States needs assistance at night time, the customer can call a customer service hotline for a company that is based in the United States and get service from an individual working in said company’s customer service office in India or another country across the globe that runs on a different time
