In the fifth grade my teacher introduced me to the value of being prepared. Since then I have been step ahead of many of my peers by preparing before class, being punctual, and staying engaged. I attribute most of my success to hard work and those three simple steps. According to my mother, that was also the year I first said I wanted to be a doctor. At the time, I did not really understand how it would happen, but I knew I was going to do something big with my education. My achievements in elementary school propelled me into the Gifted and Talented Education Program. I can still remember many lessons from those years; those were the years I fell in love with science. My parents also rewarded curiosity and thoughtfulness at home. Earning quarters …show more content…
UCI took my love of science and molded it into a love for medicine. Supportive faculty and the Campuswide Honors Program encouraged me to find my unique path and pursue a career in pharmacy. After joining the National Society for Leadership and Success, I was inspired to use my strengths to help others. One of my greatest accomplishments in college has been coordinating Compassion in Healthcare for the nursing science program. It is a class created by students who won the XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship. The course planning, execution, and grading is all completed by a team of students. Each year we develop the syllabus and invite several speakers with expertise in our areas of focus. Our goal is to cultivate compassion in pre-health students and emphasize its importance in patient-centered care. Compassion in Healthcare has been an amazing opportunity for me to reach out to my peers and professionals with a variety of roles in healthcare. The class introduced me to VITAS hospice where I volunteered my time and Students for Integrative Medicine (SIM). SIM is an organization for undergraduates and medical students. One of our main goals is to educate students about modalities of complementary and alternative medicine. SIM has made me more open-minded about many therapies and has motivated me to advocate for a holistic approach to evidence-based medicine. Being

Describe your particular interest in attending UNE COM and any contact you have had with UNE COM students, alumni, faculty or clinicians, admissions counselors, student affairs staff, etc. How did these interactions influence your decision to apply? The University of New England College of Medicine has an interesting curriculum that is centered around the patient in order to treat the mind, body and spirit. This curriculum is appealing to me because not every patient symptomatology follows the textbooks and it is vital to learn with a patient focused curriculum and through the use of case studies. In addition to the curriculum, the University of New England provides a unique environment to learn and practice medicine through the use…

I believe we are living in one of the most exciting times in medicine, as we have the privilege of witnessing amazing advancements in science such as the genetic sequencing of Human Genome Project and study of stem cells for regenerative medicine. These amazing advancements in modern science are coinciding with a renaissance of preventive health care. The increase in globalization has resulted in a blending of cultures, from allopathic medication to alternative medicines and, as a massage therapist, I have a special interest in the benefits provided by palliative care.…

I was and still am fascinated by the human body, I enjoyed helping others, and there seemed to be something different to see everyday. As I sat anxiously in my desk the last day of high school, I felt compelled and overwhelmed to decide what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare because of my mother, who was a registered nurse. Witnessing the love and care my mother had for every patient even when she was not on the clock really inspired the drive for me to impact the lives of others just as I saw her do. Although after I shadowed one of my mother’s colleagues, I knew I could not handle the gory aspects that are associated with most healthcare professions; however, this shadowing experience led me to discover my initial desire to help others and make a difference. I owe my foremost interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy to my paternal grandparents.…

At the age of seven, I remember going up to my mother and saying I would become a doctor. Like most parents, she dismissed my comment as something that any kid would say at such a young age while still trying to figure out what path to lay for the future. However, it was four years ago that my family and I made the decision to move to the United States and search for better opportunities despite the fact that I had already completed my first year of medical school. The day I was boarding at the airport, I received the long-awaited phone call from the admissions office of the medical school of my dreams. I waited almost two years after graduating high school to get admitted and transfer, but unfortunately, without hesitation, I had already taken…
