Summary Of Michelle Obama's Commencement Speech

In 2013, at Bowie State University Michelle Obama made an extremely motivational commencement speech to the graduating class. Obama’s speech was incredibly powerful and heartfelt. She talked about the possible struggles and tough times that individuals went through to become educated, the history of the school, history of how African-Americans couldn’t become educated and several other topics. However, topic in particular stood out, and it was that countless young adults just don’t care about getting an education. Mrs. Obama says “When it comes to getting an education, young people today just can’t be bothered” (Obama 3). A lot of young adults today aren’t focused on obtaining an education given that they put little effort, waste time, and subsequently how society is today in America.
Without a doubt, kids nowadays believe they’ll become famous, become rich by not doing anything and think they’ll become the next MJ or big time rapper. In a graphic provided by media.cagle.com, it displays a student from China reading a math textbook and a student from India reading a science textbook, while the student from America has his book not even open and is just listening to music (Study Habits.

Students spend nine percent of their time attending class/lab and seven percent studying, while they spend fifty-one percent of their time socializing and recreating in accordance to hechingerreport.org (IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE LEARNING: Findings and Policy Recommendations from the SSRC-CLA Longitudinal Project 2011). So kids do poorly in school and on tests because for one: they are barely coming to class and for two: they hardly study. Kids should treat school as a “job” and should work hard then play hard. This means that a pupil should “work hard” in school during the weekdays so they can “play hard” on the weekends and there is plenty of time to socialize at that
