Gerontology is the scientific study of old age, the process of aging, and the particular problems of old people. The field of gerontology is very broad, and there are many subfields. Geriatrics focuses strictly on the medical conditions and disease of the aging, gerontology is a multidisciplinary study that incorporates biology, psychology and sociology. It is important to study gerontology because it makes us understand the older adults better and to appreciate the subject of aging studies/gerontology in general, there must be a commitment to create a multidisciplinary overview for all to understand the aging process across diverse groups of individuals (taking into account race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, etc.).
