Why Did George Want To Die In Of Mice And Men

If you ever had a choice of killing your best friend or letting them suffer from the bad choices they have made, what would you do? This is a very hard question to answer. In John Steinbeck´s story Of Mice and Men one of the main characters in the story, George, has a tough decision to make with his best friend, Lennie. Lennie has done a bad thing, and he has no way of getting out of it this time. Therefore, George has to decide between three choices. He could either leave Lennie for Curley, kill him peacefully, or let him go to a mental institution and suffer. George makes the right choice by choosing to kill Lennie mercifully, because Lennie did not deserve to suffer, he was not going to change his ways, and he was not mentally stable. First of all, Lennie does not deserve to suffer from his actions. He has a rough time understanding right from wrong, and he does not mean to harm Curley´s wife in any way. George and Slim both know that Lennie would not do well being isolated in an institution, and they know there is only one other option for Lennie. Therefore, in George’s situation, he had to choose to kill Lennie because of his actions. Even though it was a hard choice for George, he could not think of a better way for Lennie to get out of the bad things he has done in his lifetime. He chose not to let Lennie suffer, because he knows that he did not intend to do these things out of meanness. George was only thinking about his best friend and what he could do to get him out of the pain that Curley would have put him through.
