Lack Social Skills: What Makes A Successful Leader?

Many have heard the common gender lies that women are listeners, men tune you out or even that men are leaders, women are followers. By communicating you are able to understand other 's but many people lack social skills regardless of their gender .People have associated the gender male to have the less social skills and women to be the talkers more socially involved. But ironically, we associate men as being leaders but yet believe they lack social skills when it comes to listening and associate women as followers but yet they are the talkers and give too many details never getting to the point when in reality is an upper hand on communication skills and we all know that communication is key for a "successful leader". But once again how can …show more content…

My dad is an Analytic he does not like to engage in long conversation because he is constantly worrying about the next task or when he has to wake up for work. Amiables and Analytic appear to be better listeners because they don 't talk as much or interrupt as much as Drivers and Expressives. My mom loves talking over people and can 't wait to talk or tell her side of something it 's because she is A Driver and Expressive not because she is a women who talks to much. Communication is key in any relationship. By understanding a person social style and upbringing you allow yourself to have a better understanding in ways to communicate with that person. Both reading relate to our class discussion on Thursday because they focus on communication and how leader must be able to communicate with others to be a "successful leader" and how gender stereotypes have been placed on leadership and both books give great examples of how gender does not impact communication but social styles does and that being a successful leader you have to know how to communicate with others you have to know how to listen well to be a good leader as

The literature selected focuses on the differences between the genders in nonverbal communication. There are several nonverbal functions and forms that could be discussed, but this literature review primarily focuses on the points that are relevant to the analysis. The section concludes with several key criteria points that the analysis will be based off of. Julia T. Wood explains that there are three main functions to nonverbal communication: To supplement verbal communication, to regulate interaction, and to “convey the bulk of the relationship level of meaning” (2014). While the first function will not apply to the analysis in this paper, the two others will.…

When asked to describe an ideal leader, many would name attributes such as intelligence, toughness, determination and vision, which are all qualities traditionally associated with leadership. What most would often forget is that while softer skills are not as prominent in many leaders, these skills play an immense part in a leader’s overall success. In fact, some studies indicate that emotional intelligence may be the key attribute that distinguishes outstanding performers from those who are merely adequate. Micki King, John Sirica and Patsy Mink are just a few leaders who display a great balance of traits that caused them to thrive in their respective fields. Micki King, or Maxine Joyce King, is an American former competitive diver and diving…

Very rarely have a seen a man consult others before making a decision. As a leader you have to be willing to listen to others and not just make decisions based on what you think is best. I think humility is a skill a lot of women posses. As women, we can be strong and assertive, but still have humility. I think that is key, to be able to listen to others, but when it comes down to make a decision you are confident enough to make…

    Horatio Alger Myth

The way race has impacted society is it has taught us that we are judged by the color of our skin, thus having the Horatio Alger myth feels pointless because this myth says hard work and passion gets us where we are going when in reality we do not have that American theocracy we so wish for. In the response to the myth, we have the notion of the pull themselves up by the bootstraps when it simply is not true, people have learned to cheat, steal and lie to get to the top and pull a different card of sympathy or hatred such as race. Race hinders success because people perceive minorities as dumb and stupid who have their own strengths and weaknesses as well. In the “Horatio Alger” article he mentions a story about a black student who had a…

Emotional Intelligence is another topic I had heard of but not explored at any depth before this leadership class. Leadership requires the support and vision of the organization and creativity. A strong leader should have a high Emotional Intelligence (EI) factor for the staff to want to follow with his/her vision. If the culture is not where it needs to be leadership should first model the behaviors they wish to institute and then reinforce that behavior in others when observed. (Gokenbach,…

Women on the other hand, are more cooperative and use language to define and explain similarities to create friendship and ‘connection’. That is they are socially less concerned with competition and taking the “center stage” (Tannen, 2004) within a group and emphasize more on the connection of the relationship. Interestingly, her observational studies in same-sex conversations revealed the efforts of men (boys) displayed trying to be competitive, women, (girls) displayed the same amount of effort trying to be equal (even if they’re were not). Her studies indicate that men and women (again, beginning in childhood) practice conversational rituals quite differently and in order to reduce misunderstanding one should be cognitive of these vital gender differences.…

Deborah Tannens essay “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk To Each Other?” offers many explanations as to why men and women converse differently. Tannen concluded from her own research that the linguistic differences, body language, and silence in opposing settings have an equal contribution as to why the genders communicate differently among groups of all the same gender and groups of opposing gender. While women often add their input on a situation men find that as being a challenge of their dominance. Tannen effectively demonstrates the riff between the genders through the use of childhood experiences, and showing how younger experiences shape adult communication behaviors. Men and women have very different…

Response #2 The topic of who is better in the job men and women is controversial in this cotemporary era. An other thing men and women do differently is their ways of communication which obviously can cause a lack of successful communication. For example, Deborah Tannen says in her essay Sex, Lies and Conversation, “The girls in my study tended to talk at length about one topic, but boys tended to jump from topic to topic(410).” So, while a woman is talking on about her day or something for an extended period and then asks her partner if he 's listening his reply may involve an entirely different subject matter as well as his answer. He may have answered, but since his…

I would like to be head girl for one simple reason, to make a difference, and as an active member of this school I believe that I can achieve that goal by becoming head girl. With this belief, becoming head girl would not only benefit me as a person but the school as a whole. The position of head girl is one that requires a very specific set of skills at a high level, leadership, communication, organisation, being a role model and approachability to name a few, each of which I have experience with.…

“So you, as a leader, must manage these conflicting role expectations with communication and compromise” (G. Lumsden, D. Lumsden & Wiethoff, 2010, pg. 264). The role of leader influences your personality in regards to making you a more independent-minded individual. “They proposed that leaders possessed certain personality traits courage, decisiveness, intelligence, attractiveness, and so on that made them intrinsically followable, bureaucracy be damned” (Rothman, 2016, pg. 66). Leaders and their members all have a common goal to successfully create a strong team.
