Women are usually critique and objectify the majority of the time, while men are advertised just as they are without any flaws. A multitude of the women’s images today that are displayed are very demeaning. The traditional roles that women are categorized into are still being depicted, but with an enormous increase on nudity. For example, the so called ideal woman that a lot of females are brainwashed to compare themselves to for many years is; thin, white, sexy, submissive and damsel in distress kind of women. Or the women are touching themselves, playing with an object or acting in a childlike behavior. Anything other than this would be looked down upon or portray in a negative way. When I went online to search how women(in general) are portrayed in the American society, ninety five percent of the images that had popped are were the so called ideal woman. I had to search separately for minority women advertising images. In all, most the women were portrayed as some kind of sexual objects to entice whomever they are marketing to. A lot of the women were nude or their specific body parts were the main focus. For example, much of the women ads that I have found online shown exactly that. One particular Ad, the men is on top of the women holding her, but rather than looking into her face, he is starting down at an image of a car that covered her face instead. Other cultures do view women as a vulnerable creature that needs to be controlled by men. If not, then men are painted without any emotions and always in control. Some cultures even incorporated the western woman ideal image of beauty. While, the men are viewed as important and perfect in many cultures. For instance, in Africa, many of their Ads that are designed focuses on bleaching of African women skin to be lighter. This particular type of Ad is everywhere in Africa, because most of the women feels like if they don’t bleach their skin, then they would not get married. While Middle Eastern world have more male Ads than female Ads and whenever they portray the females are usually covered from head to toes and sometimes even their faces as a reminder of the importance staying a maiden. I believe many other society’s representation of gender are similar to America in many ways when it comes to portraying males as perfect creatures, while objectifying and finding all kinds of flaw in women in general.
