In the article, “Immigrants Keep an Iowa Meatpacking Town Alive and Growing” written by Patricia Cohen, there is discussion regarding a small town in northwestern Iowa which experienced a large influx of migrants over a period of time. Cohen interviews a local resident on his thoughts about the migrants moving in and obtaining many of the local jobs. The resident believed it was one of the best thing to happen to their town, as it allowed their town the opportunity to grow. First, Cohen discusses factors as to why small towns are becoming scarce.…

Mirta Ojio’s book Hunting Season, Immigration and Murder in an All-American Town is based on a true story of an immigrant’s murder that turned a small American town on Long Island village of Patchogue into a war zone for immigration rights. In this critical reflection paper, I will discuss and analyze three key issues or themes that were represented in the Hunting Season and elaborate how these concepts connect with those of Governing Immigration through Crime by Dowling and Inda. The first concept is that of the Membership Theory, a theory which “limits individual rights and privileges to the members of a social contract between the government and the people” (Dowling & Inda,2013). The Membership theory often marks out boundaries of who is an accepted member of society and who isn’t, which was demonstrated in Hunting Season when Marcelo Lucero traveled from Ecuador to Long Island.…
This quote displays the importance and the impact the past has towards the present. Flannery O’Connor takes a similar approach with her works as she displays a similar concept through characters in her work. Author Flannery O’Connor conveys the impact of the past on the present through the characters Hazel, Enoch and Lily in her novel Wise Blood, and Julian, his mother and the woman on the bus in her short story Everything that Rises Must…
“There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in the shallows and in miseries. (4.3 220-230) This quote sheds advice that has stood the test of time, giving hope to the characters as they faced war and in lands far away, inspiring those that need hope. This quote lends one of the oldest pieces of advice, missed opportunities lead to heartache. Matthew Brady’s Mistakes in Thinking The town of Hillsboro was lively and excited as they awaited for Matthew Brady to arrive. He came out to fight for a case against Bertram Cates, a man who broke the law by teaching Evolution. The town admired Brady and his thinking about the Bible and God, but little did the townspeople of Hillsboro know, that like themselves, Matthew Brady makes several mistakes in thinking.…
In the document Oscar Handlin, Immigration Portrayed As an Experience of Uprootedness, America now has many immigrants from other countries, but tracing back to the movement of immigrants, they were mostly based on peasant society that has started in Europe. Oscar Handlin gave us a point of view of that the peasants were the basis of the European economy, many people had left their homes in order to survive or tried to find a better place to stay. According to the article, village was the start and a whole for every person back in that century, and family was an economic unit. Women and men had their own work to do to make their village continued to operate, and of course, people have to live with each other that their lives were all connected…
Choose a sentence or phrase that you feel is very important to the development of the story. Explain how and why this quote is crucial to the plot, theme, characters etc. The phrase I picked out was, “You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There’s still a lot of good in the world.”…
Charles Murry says this and I think that it is significant to what the author is trying to express the whole time. Also, Murry is one of the biggest influences in her…
The play, Inherit the Wind, has helped readers realize that “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in” (Asimov). This is clearly shown though the prejudice that Henry Drummond had to face throughout the story. Drummond was to defend Darwin’s Theory in a highly religious town. This exposed Drummond to unreasonable judgement since the town was not open-minded to new opinions.…

In his book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain tackles the issues of Slavery in the United States (specifically the South). Twain does so by telling the story of a thirteen year old white boy named Huck Finn and his adventures with Jim, a black slave. It is important to note that Mark Twain wrote this book two decades after the Emancipation Proclamation, and while this abolished Slavery, racism was still a real problem of the South. Moreover, Twain establishes the significance of friendship in the novel. Through events such as Huck’s ‘band of robbers’ known as ‘Tom Sawyer’s Gang’ to his growing compassion towards Jim, it is clear that Huck treats friendship as a very serious matter his life.…
This bond that the soldiers formed helped them to survive, and helped the men of Alpha Company to cope with the war after they returned to the United States. "The bond that men form with each other in the heat of battle is incomprehensible to those who have not experienced warfare for themselves... You make close friends. You become part of a tribe and you share the same blood - you give it together, you take it together." (O'Brien, 192) This bond of friendship helps the men of Alpha Company survive on a day to day basis.…
Should our ancestor’s laws for immigration still apply today? Should reforms modernize the Constitution to reflect the population of today? The Ted Talk, "The Shifting Conversation Around Citizenship" by Julissa Arce (Arce), and the article, "The Case of Birthright Citizenship" by Linda Chavez address issues facing citizens versus undocumented people of the United States (Chavez). Ms. Arce undeniably had an arduous childhood and young adulthood, but clear documentation would support her story and turn it into a fact-based argument about the ever-changing face of the American immigrant.…
