The United States has it been under attack in the United States by the police controlling the protest, from people shutting down protest from public schools and businesses. Freedom of speech, the first amendment which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (The Bill of Rights Amend 1). In an Article, it says that “Free Speech is threatened on Campus.” (Friedersdorf 2016). He also states that 66 percent of the crowd agrees that the freedom of speech is threatened. A professor Shaun Harper of the University of Pennsylvania, he states that “This past December, we brought together 8,00 college presidents and other senior leaders who came to us for guidance on how to respond to racism on their campuses.” he later states that “I don't want anyone's speech to be suppressed in any setting.” He restricted any exercise of freedom of speech on campus. This is a problem because it's violating our Bill of Rights, many of the students like to state their opinion and stand up for what they believe in. This statement that George Washington said is very true. Look back in the days when the American colonies began developing and Great Britain was controlling the 13 colonies. They had control of everything and they had been overtaxed on things that made them over-priced. People in the colonies didn’t like this so they broke away from them. This why it’s important to be aware of the amendment; without it, we can end up like North Korea, a country that you’re not able to express what you believe or even talk about the government. Therefore, freedom of speech is important because you can inform the people that are too scared to speak up. “It’s not just about the right to speak freely, or pray freely, or assemble freely, or petition the government for a redress of grievances, or have a free press. The unspoken freedom enshrined in the First Amendment is the right to think freely and openly debate issues without being muzzled or treated like a criminal.” We don’t want to be censored by the government who try to tell us what to do, that is what makes this country special. “Like Sheep to the slaughterhouse,” this gives us an image of Sheep going into the slaughterhouse without thinking about the outcome or what direction were taking and just following the leader to the direction which of course every sheep wouldn’t want to go get killed.
