Consuming nutritious foods directly relates to a child’s mental and physical health. Food gives the body energy needed to sustain through the school day contributing to student’s academic success. The government should mandate free meals just as school attendance is mandated in early childhood education programs. In Rapides Parish and guardians face legal action if a child is truant for continuing to arrive to class late or misses more than fourteen school days. If early childhood education is important to the government to the point that a parent’s freedom is used as leverage to ensure attendance, why wouldn’t all of the factors that contribute to academic success factor in as well? Providing every student with free school meals diminishes school distractions such as shame and bullying, eases financial hardships on parents, which improves a child’s mental state and boosts academic performance.

One way to increase student lunch participation is including its cost into the annual budget. Also, voting to turn school meals into a government-funded program may discard the cost completely. Public schools can start the process by asking parents to vote in a poll for a small tax increase to cover school meal expenses for all students. Next, law makers can review those polls from each school, assess where to make possible budget cuts and accrue government funds, then all taxpayers to officially vote to provide free meals to all students enrolled in early childhood education programs.
