Fourth grade science helps reveal how the world works. Fourth graders should understand the importance of curiosity, honesty, and openness in discovering science. This is a time for them to question how the world works. In doing so they can use the scientific method to better understand. Learning the steps of the scientific method will help them with the numerous experiments we will do throughout the year. Knowing first off to identify the problem, then to ask a question following up by doing research will follow them throughout life experiences. They then can make a hypothesis, and conduct experiments, following up by collecting and analyzing data. Drawing their conclusion and sharing their results concludes the scientific …show more content…
This is always important because just because they have made it to fourth grade does not necessarily mean that they grasped the information along the way. Sometimes they just need reminded and other times they are completely lost. However, sometimes there are a few that think they know all about the topic simply because they have studied it before not realizing we will be building on the base they have already begun to develop. I give weekly formative assessments to gauge where the students are with their understanding. I offer fill in the blank, multiple choice and open-ended questions. This also helps me to know if we need to revisit an area. I am also assessing how they take notes during the week as well as to how they participate in each activity we do. In the past when I have seen a student fluctuate with their grades I take a closer look and offer tutoring after school. I also graph the results of the assessment and look for any outside issues that may have affected their learning. According to Robert Marzano in his book on excellence in teaching, “framing questions at different levels of complexity, providing time to think after asking a question, linking to the learner 's past experiences, checking to see if students understand, and providing models or visual presentation”(Marzano, p.71). Another way I gauge where they are is by giving “tickets out the door”. They are ever so excited (not) to get the blank index card. I have them list or describe the most recent topic. It is just a quick look at their understanding. At least once a month I have them write about an activity and share it with me on Google drive for a grade and assessment of their understanding. I also share their writing with their literature
