In modern society, knowing a foreign language can be a very valuable skill-set to have. In Yorkville High School, the only available foreign language electives are Spanish and German. Compared to other schools in the area, it has a relatively small amount of foreign language electives. The research team felt that Yorkville High School does not have enough foreign language electives to choose from, and we wanted to determine if other students felt the same way. The goal of the survey was to help increase the variety of foreign language electives in Yorkville High School. To achieve this, the team surveyed roughly one-hundred sophomores, juniors, and seniors to determine whether or not they would like French to be a foreign language elective

Same-Sex Schools Controversy over gender-segregated versus coeducational classrooms has raged over the past several decades. Among the arguments there are four primary sources of contention. These include socialization, stereotyping, academic gain/loss, and whether or not students should be allowed an option between coed or single-sex classes. Opponents claim that the negatives far outweigh the positives for both boys and girls while supporters of this system of classroom division maintain that students profit in numerous ways. “In the United States, part of the rationale for single-sex schooling is the view that adolescents create a culture in school that is at odds with academic performance and achievement” (Hughes).…

The show Phineas and Ferb is known for it’s emphasis on imagination and creativity, but one thing they also highlight is the idea that girls are capable and skilled in things other than stereotypical female activities. This concept of pushing the lines for gender stereotypes was developed in many episodes, but especially one entitled, “The Fast and the Phineas.” In “The Fast and the Phineas,” brothers Phineas and Ferb are trying to find something to do. As the title sequence song says, “an annual problem for our generation is finding a good way to spend it (time),” and this is a consistent theme throughout the entire show. So, the boys decide they are going to transform or, in their words, “trick out” their mom’s car and participate in the…

Surrey International Children’s Festival, Storytelling by David Bouchard Although I had been studying French for over a decade, this was my very first French cultural event I have ever been to in the Lower Mainland. Living and studying Core French in BC did not give me much exposure to French Culture. Unless I intentionally choose to listen to FM 97.7, La Radio-Canada, the only French station in BC, I perceived difficulties in finding the French and Francophile community in Vancouver. However, when I was young, I have lived in Montreal for about two and half years and I had a privilege of being exposed to French cultural events such as the Du Maurier Festival de Jazz in Montreal and a day trip to La Cabane a Sucre in Mont-Saint-Gregoire.…

For example, boys usually do not receive the top grades in school. On average, boys are almost two years behind girls in reading ability and 70% of failing grades are given to boys. It has been shown that students who are low performing readers are most at risk for dropping out of school. Another example is that girls outnumber the boys when graduating from high school. Boys make up the majority of high school drop outs.…

Little et al. (2014) described how symbolic interactional theorists view education as a way of individually labeling students, while feminist theorists focus mainly on “the mechanisms and roots of gender inequality in education” (p. 502). Individual labels can stay with a student throughout their life. Studies show that there is more chance of a high school student stopping their further education (such as, university) if they are told, and therefore also labeled, by their teachers that they will not achieve the necessary scores to succeed. I can even recall classmates whom this happened to when I was in high school in the late 1990s, and sure enough, they chose to get an unskilled job, rather than continue their education.…

University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of French and Italian College of Letters and Science Many people say that I am a member of the generation X, born just before the war, in a country that was right in the process of falling apart. Not long after I first saw the light of day, my country has changed several times its name, its anthem, geographical layout and national identity. I was waiting in line in the arms of my mother to get some milk, I have survived an awful authoritarian regime, but I also witnessed the building of the first democratic revolution in this region. I do not mention all of this because I like to deal with the past.…
