Food was a very important element in Greek society. It was what separated animals from people, and people from Gods. When they drank wine, they thought of the Greek god Dionysus as being a part of it. They also thought of the Greek goddess Persephone as being a part of their bread. As you can tell, there was a certain prominence to the food of the Greeks. Most people in Greece dined on bread and wine with olive oil. Cheese, lentils, chickpeas, cabbage, apples, figs, and almonds were also popular. The Greeks possibly ate more fish than most other Mediterranean people at the time. Meat was only eaten on holidays.
