There are numerous stories of leaders who have made remarkable contributions to society and their field of study. For example, Florence Nightingale contributed her legacy to health care by stressing the importance of establishing nurse professional training programs and improved hospital conditions (McDonald, 2001). Nightingale’s legacy is one of nursing structure and improved systems and has lived on for more than a hundred years. Not everyone’s legacy has to be as grandiose or impactful as Nightingale’s, although, a legacy planned and carried out with purpose and leadership can easily impact an entire organization. It is not the size of the influence that determines a lasting legacy; instead it is the character of the person behind that influence.
