A strategic plan is generally short lived and straightforward and consists of goals for the leader and the organization to accomplish. Once a strategic plan goal has been achieved, the plan is updated and replaced with new goals. Conversely, a leader’s legacy makes a difference in the lives of others and remains evident even after the leader is gone from the organization. It is a lifelong journey and a standard of excellence for others to model (De Pree, 1997). Leaders decide what they want their lasting legacy to be. It is the daily action, interactions, and relationships. It is all the moments throughout a career that makes the legacy. To ensure the leader creates a legacy to be proud of, they must focus on becoming a high-level leader. High-level leaders create a culture of leadership and empowerment where other leaders rise up and create a successful, growing organization.
