In a society where laws are made to protect the people, Mencken’s observation of the American society has never been truer. Because of recent shootings in Newtown, CT, the terrorist attacks in 2001, and teenage death rates at an all time high, Americans have voted in several laws to protect the general public.

Recent shootings in Newtown, Aurora, and Colorado Springs, consequently, have reignited the controversial argument, should guns be outlawed? The United States constitution states that "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Gun safety amendments are voted in to keep the people safer, not freer. The 9/11 attacks were targeted at the Twin Towers, but the American people have blamed ‘Islamic Terrorist Groups’ or ‘Islamic Radicals.’ The statement in itself is inaccurate and irresponsible. Obama during an interview said, “Groups like ISIL and al-Qaeda want to make this war a war between Islam and America, or between Islam and the West.”(Washington Post) Using a sweeping generalization of all Islam followers and the minute amount of extremists is intolerable, the American people should not stoop to these lows. The recent election of President Elect Trump is a clear example of racial and religious distrust, as well as biased opinion. Trump commented on an Islamic adhering, gold- star family, who after hearing Trump’s comments about his bigoted rhetoric, spoke out against him. Trump later replied, “If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.”(Huffington Post) Later, Trump called out a federal judge, presiding over a class action against the for-profit Trump University, as being “biased because he is a Mexican.”(Huffington Post) Because of the first amendment in the constitution, “abridges the freedom of speech,” except in cases of slander and libel, this particular part of the amendment is included to safeguard a reputation. …show more content…
Anyone who is a citizen of any country must abide by the laws laid down by that said government. Freedom is defined as, “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants.” All must submit or be entitled to the consequences, in the court of law. Freedom is not freely given either. The United States had to go through the Revolutionary War to gain independence and freedom from Great Britain. The French Revolution was fought to establish a French government with no patriarchy. The monarchy of England was torn down by even the monarchy itself, and reestablished as a fully represented

Most Americans know and believe in freedom for all, but when put into perspective, are we really free? We have the choice to go where we want, choose what we desire, and do what we please, as long as we stay within the limited freedoms given to us by society. However, are these restrictions necessary? Is one obligated to keep their ideas to themselves, in fear of being ridiculed by their superiors and associates? Should all people accept what they’re told to them by their leader, and not question whether there’s a better way?…

In H.L. Mencken’s writing, he explains how “the average man does not want to be free, but wants to be safe.” BUt freedom is not only more important, but necessary for safety of the individual and the society. THroughout history there are many example of societies and even nations that attempted the idea of “public safety” over individual freedom. In my opinion people should stay free permanently because people should have to fight for something they have already earned many years ago.…

The Founding Fathers of the United States wrote the Second Amendment to the Constitution for a reason; to protect the rights of the people. This means that citizens have the privilege and ability to possess a gun and use than gun for lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. The government has no right to restrict them in owning guns for this reason. Further amending the right to own a gun would only do more harm than good in the United States. By creating stricter gun control laws, the government would not solve the problem of criminals obtaining weapons and would only take away the protection of the people.…

The culture and laws of a country are heavily influenced by its history. The United States of America was born out of violence. On July 4th 1776, a group of well-respected Americans signed The Declaration of Independence, officially announcing America’s separation from Great Brittan and initiating the Revolutionary War. Once America emerged as victors of the war in 1783, in order to protect the civil rights of American citizens, laws were created by members of legislature. In contrast, Donald Trump tends to attack everyone and anyone that opposes him, even if he is defeated. His insults towards other people and his candidates are politically incorrect because he is a racist and a misogynist. In Princely Virtues Chapter 17 Cruelty and Passion, Machiavelli states, “All the same, a leader must think carefully before believing and responding to certain allegations and not get frightened over nothing,” (66). Donald Trump tends to lash out towards others to create a sense of fear and he tries to defend himself over the criticisms he gets, and as a result of his behaviors, he will insult fellow political figures and bring them down to present himself better. Either way gun laws have become progressively strict based on various shootings, massacres, and deaths across the nation. America's gun culture stems from colonial history and revolutionary roots. According to the National center for Injury Prevention and Control, “Every day on average, 55 people kill themselves with a firearm, and 46 people are shot or killed in an accident with a gun.” My own experience supports this viewpoint. My grandmother easily feels threatened by guns. Once when she was going to get out of her car, somebody put a gun to her head.…
