Why Is Fighting A War Ethically Wrong

Improved Essays
Often we are asked if fighting a war is ethically right or wrong. However, without fighting a war ourselves and experiencing the pain and grief a solider has could we truly ever answer this question. Would it be ethically right to ask a veteran how it feels to fight a battle alongside his cavalry? Do most veterans think that what they did for freedom was ethically right or wrong and how do these experiences follow them through life? “I’m occasionally asked, “What’s it like to kill someone?” Sometimes I’m not asked what killing someone feels like; I’m told. “It must feel horrible to kill someone.” And, infrequently, but harshly enough to sting, I’ve been judged” (Marlantes 26). In my personal opinion, I find this ethically wrong to walk up to a known veteran and blurt out have you killed anyone in the war or how could you even kill someone else. According to Marlantes most of the time he gets frustrated and angry when asked these questions (Marlantes 27). Honestly can you blame him?
I do not think that I have ever even thought about asking a veteran about killing someone. We have no place to judge these men and women for what they stood for or ask about what that solider did for our freedom, but to just thank him or her for their service and hard work. A lot

The adrenalin that is pumping through your body with every rapid heartbeat allows for the necessary actions to take to stay alive. Without even thinking you are able to pull that trigger or throw a grenade without a second guess. Marlantes explains later in his story how to make things easier to kill you give the enemies different names and think of them as anything less than humans; “I didn’t kill people, sons, brothers, fathers. I killed “Crispy Critters” (Marlantes

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

What is morality? Surely it can’t be taking men, women, and children to a camp because you don’t like the color of their skin, their religion, or even what people from their home country have done. “This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure. Death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a beginning generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war”(Remarque). Taking place in World War two, a young man loses everything he held dear to him by becoming a soldier. In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, Erich demonstrates how the war can force soldiers to grow up by destroying their identity, youth, and innocence.…

One would think that an American citizen of the United States would have knowledge of all the wars that our military has fought in sadly, this American, meaning myself, does not. In fact, the wars I do know about is most likely only a small tiny portion of the battles that were fought. I know there were wars with other countries and wars within our own country but even then, I still don’t know much about them. Here is a brief example of all the war’s I am familiar with; First, The American Revolutionary War that was fought in America in 1775, against Great Britain. The purpose of the war was to fight for our independence and declare ourselves an independent United States (thirteen colonies) of America.…

What a veteran means to me. The dictionary definition of a veteran is, a person who has has long experience in a particular field of the military, or a person who has served in the military. Federally, a veteran is someone who has served in ANY war, in ANY branch of military for ANY length of time. If you served in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps or Navy you are considered a veteran. I believe that someone who can fight for strangers , people they don't even know, along with their own family even if they only served for a week, a year, twelve years, deserves more respect than anyone.…

In addition to the McMillian case, there are many other instances of injustice presented in this book. Two, in particular, occur in chapter two and deal with police brutality. In the first of cases, a black man named Lourida Ruffin was beaten after the police pulled him over for a traffic violation. After the beating concluded, the police restricted Ruffin from grabbing his asthma inhaler. Shortly after his arrest and incarceration, he was found dead in his jail cell.…
