When it comes to the topic of Fat Tax for being overweight in the United States, most of us will readily agree that they should not be tax for being obese. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of whether or not overweight people should be Tax. Overweight people should not be tax. Being taxed for being overweight is ridiculous because they could be suffering from depression or have an eating disorder. Although many people have different opinions, ultimately I believe that there should not be a fat tax for being overweight in the U.S. since they being overweight may stem from a disorder, it could lead to or be considered discriminatory, and …show more content…
Obesity is a disease with endocrine and genetics causes, as in Prader-Willi and Bardet-Biedl syndromes. If a child is obese they do not have an eating disorder or disease they just don’t know how to eat correctly. They stated, “Obesity is a problem of energy balance: more calories consumed than those spent in physical activity. (22)” In other words they think that obese people eat a lot and are indolent since they are not physically active like skinny people. My cousin who is the same age as me is really skinny and fit. Every time we go out to eat she eats so much, double what I eat and still looks great while I eat less than her and I’m fatter. In my perspective I believe it all depends on the person and their genes. In the book, I found it really motivating that they mentioned how back in the days from the 1970s and 1980s schools had a nutrition class, school food programs and a physical education workshop. They had a lot of counseling techniques that concerned fitness, athletic performance, and weight loss. That is why a lot of people were not over weight. The percent now compared to back than was a big difference due to the fact that now schools allow junk food to be sold at campus and before they were prohibited. If people that are overweight are really lazy and eat like there’s no tomorrow then maybe they should be taxed because they are not putting effort into trying to look better and be healthier. Anyone can lose weight it’s just a matter of dedication and dieting. One doctor stated, “It’s like talking to someone who’s eighty years old. Overweight kids have the same maladies [that seniors do];

    The reason that taxing foods with a great amount of fat would be beneficial is because the extra money that would be paid could help in many different ways. One beneficial outcome of taxing unhealthy foods would be that some people may not want to pay the extra thirty or so cents for a certain item. While some may say that thirty cents is not much, certain people will refuse to buy something that once costed less. The main beneficial outcome of taxing unhealthy foods would be using the taxes accumulated from junk food to put it towards healthier options that are usually more expensive. A main reason it is very difficult for Americans to eat healthy is because of the high prices.…

Furthermore, overweight or obese preschoolers are 5 times more likely than normal-weight children to be overweight or obese as adults, according to an article published by the Obesity Society (OS). This rapid increase in obesity is not the product of changing biology or genes; it is the product of an obesogenic environment that promotes inactivity and overeating, according to an article published by the American Psychological Association (Johnson). Altho I agree with you, nobody chooses to be fat, and medical conditions can play a role in your weight. I disagree with you when you say the fat tax implies being fat is a choice. Implementing the fat tax may just give people the incentive to eat healthy, helping them realise that food with little to no nutrients is meant as a treat, and not for everyday consumption. I also disagree that the fat tax is discriminating against the working poor, because if implemented correctly the tax money earned, can be used to help them buy healthier options with things like voucher programs and that will benefit them in the long run. I don't think People affected by medical conditions are not being discriminated against because if they choose healthy…
