1. Introduction
In the contemporary world companies are faced with constant changes. One of the change that is visible is the inclusion of women in labour market (Staveren, 2013; Albrecht, 2003). In 1950 the American labour force comprised of 30 percent of women. This figure has reached a half margin at 50% (CEA, 2014). South Africa also is undergoing the same transformation. The biggest change in this country was seen after the country entered the democratic phase after 1994 (Maja and Nakanyane, 2005). Kelly, (2013) has highlighted that it is difficult to determine that this policy are effective in empowering women in career leaders. Other researchers emphasized this family friendly policies as reinforcement of gender equality in the work environment (Callan, 2007). Work life balance is challenged by individual priorities, it is normally a choice between work obligations and family responsibilities. This is all for company to maximise profits while by attracting best talent without limits on where and how work is done.
2. The need for family-friendly policies
To really understand the necessity of family friendly polices Albrecht 2003 painted a clear picture to contrast the situation in 1966 where women had to choose a career or a family. During this period man worked and most women had to stay home women took care of the children and household work. This has all evolved. Today only 20% of USA family still experience this situation. Most family today are made up of both parents working (CEA, 2014).
The needs, wants and responsibility for people are different, even an individual has dynamic responsibility as they go through various stages of development or growth. An example of the stage of, life can clearly explain in a scenario in letter figure 1 is an example of how the needs of an individual might evolve as they grow. Not all people have the same pattern of life other person might have a different life pattern as our values and beliefs are different. Figure 2 is pictured collage of how this might look like.
