But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Cor. 13:13 (NIV) Faith, hope and love all work together. “God’s love in our hearts actually does the believing, while love turns hope into faith.” It would seem like this would be the other way around, faith bringing hope and hope bringing love, but it is God’s love that changes a heart. Until a heart is changed through Christ’s love, a real true honest love that has never been known, nor could be known otherwise, then hope cannot activate faith. Christ love is first of all pure, undefiled with life or doubt or hurt or heartache, but pure unrelenting love. His pursuit of a person’s heart is unending. When a heart if broken because of what they understand that Christ did for them, they are given new life and a new hope for the future. It is then that faith begins to grow and dreams and life begin to meet. There is a difference between faith and hope however. Faith is the strong or unshakeable belief in something, without proof or evidence, where hope is a feeling of confidence and desire for certain things to happen. Hope may be something that is seen, a dream or desire where faith is the unwavering strength that gets you through any storm that comes to destroy your hope. Hope is wanting something to happen, where faith the knowing that it will happen no matter what the circumstances, or the trails and tribulation that it takes to get you there. Although faith is used in a variety of ways throughout the bible it takes discipline and time to study out what you need to have, in order to build your faith. Jesus does not give you your faith, you have to build it. The Holy Spirit imparts the gift of faith, but maintaining that is on each and every individual person. Hebrews 1:11 is a verse that is covered repeatedly when memorizing faith. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.” The rest of this chapter takes you through those who believed in faith through scripture and those who lived by faith.
