Lowering the blade down upon the wood, I watched the saw cut into the wood, and in fifteen seconds my first cut was made. I soon realised after my first cut, the point of stage crew was not just to build musical sets, but to learn building skills, and to find courage in yourself to learn something new.

At any given day, a stage crew member would touch any tools available, which include a dremel, screwdrivers, impact screwdrivers, chop saws, and circular saws. Each tool had its own nerve-racking sound and practical use. After being guided by the Senior members of stage crew, I overlooked the noise and I became skilled at using each tool. I recall being told failure was always an option, simply because a person can not do something successfully, without knowing how to fail. Soon enough, I completely understood the lingo stage crew members use to build the sets. I comprehended each name for the type of wood, every tool, and how the build process

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

My first experience working in a low income community was when I was a sophomore at Georgia State University. I was a member of a Post Readiness Educational Program (PREP). My role at PREP was to go to low income middle schools during the week and help seventh and eighth graders with homework and talk to them about how to prepare for high school and what they will need to do in order to succeed. When helping the students with their homework I realized how incredibly smart they were, yet they had so many outside influences that were a distraction. Some of these distractions included, but were not limited to, family problems, poverty, and issues with peers at school.…
