Certain church leaders utilize the pulpit and/or Bible studies to further the emphasis on faith and the Scriptural creation story. I attended a church that openly discussed the issues of evolution and faith via a weekly group that viewed a series titled The Truth Project, sponsored by Focus on the Family. Interestingly, a Pew Research article discusses comments asserted by the current Pope Francis concerning the Roman Catholic Church’s viewpoint on evolution, as it states, “evolution in nature is not inconsistent” (Masci, 2014, para. 1). Growing up in a Lutheran church offered me a liberal side, as the focus leaned towards the moral teachings of Jesus, rather than the intertwining of science and faith, matching the liberal Protestants of the late nineteenth century. As an adult and a born-again Christian, my experiences have shifted more to fundamentalist ideals, by taking to heart what God’s Word claims.
