Although, I am still in the same state I was born and raised in I am four hours from home. College has taught me numerous of things that I could not have learned from staying home and attending my community college. Moving four hours away from my family who has always sheltered, and given me everything I ever needed was intimidating. Going away to college has given me more options to explore and understand different cultures. I have learned new things through different races, foreign exchange students, and different backgrounds. Although Chicago, and St. Louis are both big cities the two are very unique. I grew up being forty minutes from Chicago so St. Louis was very different to me. I have studied the differences between the cities and grew to respect that people do things differently than me. I have a new appreciation for all types of backgrounds, and customs.
Although, I am only a freshman in college I can say with great pride that college has been the best experience I have ever had. Through all the friends I have made, my sorority, my newly found freedom and independence, and lasting memories has made this year unforgettable. I believe that everyone should experience going away to college so they can spread their wings, and discover

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. About 40 years ago, the American public decided that the only way to be competitive and gain an advantage in this world was through a college education. Higher education has been lamanted as “an economic imperative”(Owen and Sawhill 208) that can no longer be seen as optional or supplemental for people hoping to to attain a job in the workforce. This means that without getting a degree, you are not only shirking your responsibility as a functioning member of society, but you are also cutting yourself out of your own possible economic prospects. This relatively new attitude towards higher learning resulted in noticeable shifts throughout the country. We expanded college preparatory courses throughout the nation’s public schools and started…

Since I am the first generation of my family to attend college straight after high school, my parents made it very clear to me that I had to go. Also because I am the oldest of my siblings, I would have to set an example so that they can do the same and therefore follow in my footsteps. My parents will constantly tell me how college is extremely important and how getting a degree will make life easier. That’s because without making good money in this world it will be very difficult to live a decent life without struggles.…
