Have you ever wanted someone to stop talking forever or at least only speak when spoken to? What about living in a world where there’s no stress about going to college, choosing your career, or listening to people drone on and on about their love life? Even though that sounds great, Equality, a citizen of The City in the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, shows that it’s actually quite dismal. The Council governs the citizens by administering their jobs, interdicting their relationships, and making distinct laws that regulate their quotidian, mundane lives.

People can fall in love with people who don’t love them back and it can drive them to hurt other people. Love is one of the strongest things there is and the Council knows that so they took action. This is an evil thing to say, for it is a transgression, the great Transgression of Preference, to love any among men better than the others since we must love all men and all men are our friends. So International 4-8818 and we have never spoken of it. But we know”(Rand 30). Friendships like those are unimpeachable, therefore, in most cases, the friends’ would do anything for each other which could jeopardize the whole system.
