Personal Narrative: English Language Learners

Ukraine to the U.S. I had the privilege to become friends with a student from the Ukraine my first year at UVa-Wise. I saw this student, Andrew*, in my art class, but he barely spoke to anyone. I assumed he was just shy, so one day I asked him about a piece he was working on. That is when I heard his awesome accent, and I was immediately intrigued. I spent that whole class asking him about where he was from and if he liked it here in the states. Unfortunately, he was not completely fluent in English yet, so he was nervous and hard to understand. This was okay though, because I got to know him through his art, and we became great friends. Now that he is great with his English, I have learned that he actually lived in Russia most of his life. Because Andrew has experienced both cultures, he was a perfect candidate for my interview. Andrew was very excited to start kindergarten at age 5, and in Russia, most students attend free of costs. He was able to stay with the same group of friends throughout his …show more content…
was fun. This reminds me that any students I have who are English Language Learners just need extra patience, and not to let them feel shy or lost. He mentioned it was comforting making friends when he came here, which lets me know I need to help any ELL students interact with other students. I now see that education in other parts of the world are not necessarily that much different from ours. My entire experience with meeting someone from a different culture helps me relate to others coming to the states. When I begin teaching, I want to get to know each student and their culture so I can make sure they are getting the most out of their education. I will use hand gestures and simplified sentences to make communication easier, the way I did with Andrew. With so many ELL students in the U.S., I am sure I will encounter some, and this interview has given me some helpful

I think my reading has improved because I use better vocabulary and I can understand what I am reading. The reading strategies have helped me to become a better reader. I still rely on DJE, T2T like I did when I took basic reading as well. They are very helpful strategies that help me to read better and think about what I am reading. For this and other classes my goals are to understand what I am reading and being able to sum up what I read with very little difficulty.…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

As stated in the assignment description, literacy is entirely acquired in context. As I’ve known how to read since my early developmental years, it wasn’t that I was able to read something into much later on. Reading a novel is different from reading an article on a newspaper or online as reading a screenplay is different from reading a poem. When I first started college two years ago, I acquired an entirely new literacy of a digital artifact in a digital media class. In the class, a core project was the development of a professional personal website.…

Interviewing a person from another culture can bring you closer together in my opinion. The person I interviewed was a young woman named Shewit. I learned so many different things about her cultural background it was super cool. Her ethnic heritage was some Eritrean and/or East African. Shewit’s family generation goes as far back as her grandparents, this makes her and her sisters the first born into the United States in her family.…

On the first day of the new school, I found out that I had a French art teacher. An Asian girl sat at the lunch table in front of me eating chicken and rice. Nothing was like I had imagined and feeling isolated, I saw this Indian boy playing on the slides. Feeling like I had finally found someone I can relate to, I ran towards him and asked him if I could play with him, in Gujarati. He responded “I don’t know what you’re saying”.…

Like most children who grew up in a bilingual environment, I had trouble discerning Japanese and English when I was growing up in California, since I spent most of the time with my mother’s family. Because of that, any English I absorbed through PBS shows was mashed together with Japanese to form Japanglish. Then I briefly attended preschool in Naha, which made it even worse. I barely made it to elementary school. My kindergarten teacher recommended me to stay another year, but my parents refused to allow it.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

The individual that I chose for my interview is a 37 year old male who was born and raised in Germany, but presently resides in northern Indiana. He relocated to the United States for work-related reasons. His name is Michael Drue and he is, at this time, married to my first cousin Krisha, a native English speaker, having been born in the United States. I chose Michael as the person of interest for my intercultural interview not only because he is speaks English as a second language, but also because of the point of view he was able to give me regarding the difficulties that language and cultural barriers may present in an interpersonal relationship. When I enquired at what age he was when he started to learn English as his second language,…
