Personal Narrative: Joining The Engineering Club

Good Essays
When joining an organization of some sort, everyone in that particular organization shares the same knowledge or interest. Many people assume you join an organization because you already have knowledge of what the organization is about, but I believe even if you don’t have the knowledge before joining doesn’t mean you can’t join. For me, I had trouble fitting in at the Engineering Club at my High School. I didn’t have any knowledge about engineering before joining the club, but that didn’t stop me, I was still interested to find out what it was all about. You might ask why join this club and well you were able to learn things you couldn’t learn in classroom or books such, learning how to collaborate with other people you don’t know, how to …show more content…
It was also the day where I had to prove to everyone else that I deserved to be part of the team, but first I had to come across many obstacles. By the time I entered the classroom where the club meets everyone was already choosing what part of the robot they wanted to work on. The options were the wheels, arm, base, and programming. For certain I didn’t know how to program so that was out of the question from the other three choices I had left I decided to work on the wheels which didn’t seem too difficult to do. The size of the wheels was already drawn on the piece of wood it was just my turn to cut them out and sand them. I went to the back and picked up the electric jig saw to begin cutting out the wheels. I had no idea how to use the power tools so I asked one of the officers for …show more content…
So I decided to talk to the officers in private and tell them I was sorry for screwing up the first two times. The officers then started to laugh, saying it reminded them how they were when they first joined the club it brought back all their memories of how badly they messed up and just continued to laugh. This wasn’t a lousy situation though, they said it happens to everyone. They even offered to help me learn more about engineering and the terms and that I had great ideas, even though I didn’t think they were. Overall they still wanted me on their team no matter what It didn’t matter if I had knowledge of engineering to begin with I was finally one of them. They even offered me a spot on their team for the next competition, they would be doing next semester call T.A.R.C which the club would need to split into two teams since there is a team member

For example, I knew how to code well and could find ways to do just about anything, but I could not design a color scheme for our website to save my life. Thankfully, one of my teammates actually did the graphic design for our chapter and possessed a great talent for this, so she was able to take our design and give me back a color scheme that popped, and reflected our school pride. This was not an easy task; it took us over a week to accomplish together, and after that, we still critiqued it until the very minute it was due. I would never have developed these skills had it not been for this competition, and thanks to it I not only possess these abilities, but am actively improving them from running for office and being…

At the same time that Science Olympiad was going on I was learning about trusses and weight distribution in my engineering class which was very helpful. It was very convenient because I would be able to have somewhere to go in order to build a good bridge. Even though I had these resources I didn’t take advantage of it. On the other hand, when it came to my academics I was not sure what to do, but since the odds were in my favor because I didn’t do stem last year, I ended up with a friend as my partner. So I chose to follow my friends and teacher’s opinion by studying fingerprints for my forensics.…

My research skills grew through this trip provided by Mrs. Mohr. When I first heard about the trip, I wasn’t so interested because I thought all colleges were the same, but my friends then told me to give it a try and that I might end up liking one of the schools, which did end up happening. One extremely helpful thing I learned was that always try to visit the campus first, before applying because you might get accepted and eventually hate it. I have also learned to always look at the majors, programs, activities, etc a school has. I believe this trip has helped me determine how I will research the school and help me decide whether or not I will apply there.…

My personal journey throughout Group Dynamics with my group, and why it matters. Frankly speaking, there are many things that I personally expected and did not expect when starting this course. I was pleasantly surprised when I came to these realizations because it is not just I who was taking the skills and qualities away once the course is finished. My team members and classmates, who got to enjoy this course with me, also learned these skills and traits. So that in the future we are all better prepared, more experienced and have a strong comprehension of course material, that we can apply it to our given engineering course, or future employment.…

I was amazed at the differences in many of the engineering fields as some caught my attention. I would often ask my uncle to help me build items such as toy cars, boats, etc. We would talk for hours about the process and function of the different components. When I started high school, I was very anxious to start exploring the field of engineering. The classes I took to further feed my curiosity and develop my interest were unlike any other classes I had taken before; instead of being taught something and told to memorize it, I was taught how something works and told to apply it to solve a specific problem.…

Another aspect of this trip that aided in me feeling more comfortable with my decision to attend WVU was being able to meet one of the Engineering teachers. Mr. Hamrick was a great resource for learning more about the freshman engineering program, and I would love to take a class that he is teaching in the future. One addition to this trip that could have made me feel more equipped to start at WVU would be having the opportunity to walk around the campus during free time. Before my Adventure trip I was more nervous than excited about starting college, and now I feel that the opposite is true. That is not to say that I no longer have any fears about starting college, but I do feel better equipped to handle the aspects of college…

The group immediately chose me as a group leader without me saying anything. Then, on the day of the presentation they told me that I was the best person to be the leader of the group and that they admired my leadership skills. Due to these comments, I realized that my peers have always naturally selected me as a leader. Last year I was appointed the group leader for each group project I had. In addition, when I first transferred to Towson, one of my professors (to this day I still do not know who), nominated me to the National Society of Leadership and Success.…

Not only did the students have to make smart decisions when budgeting, but they had to work hard into getting a eight hundred dollar worth robot to beat a robot that was worth more than twelve times theirs was in a competition. The computer science teacher at Carl Hayden, Allan Cameron, was the teacher sponsoring Carl Hayden’s robotics program this year. At the after school meeting, Cameron was not expecting many students to be interested. This, to begin with was a bad start because his standards were set low before it even began. This shows how the students had to be self motivated and had to build their own confidence.…

They focus on helping young and upcoming engineers interested in electrical and computer engineering focus their visions. They also provide workshops designed to inspire these budding engineers and provide them with ideas for new visions and concepts. One thing they strongly encourage is the fact that anyone can do the things they do. Many of the workshops they hold are advertised as “No experience needed.” In fact, you could show up to a meeting with little to no computer experience and learn from them. They are always glad to welcome new members, and help returning members advance (UW Stout Branch of the IEEE, 2015).…

Once I discovered the computer maintenance program I deeply desired to join the class unfortunately I didn’t have any more free electives. Even though I was already involved in other extracurricular activities I was able to be a part of the Cyber Patriots Club afterschool. Every Tuesday and Thursday after school I would go to Cyber Patriots after I went to band practice. I enjoy it so much that I would go every chance I could. Defending and hardening computer systems to prevent hackers from accessing them is a trill like no other.…
