In a study conducted by Dr. Angela Duckworth, a professor of psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, along with three other professors from the same university and West Point Military Academy, they found perseverance as the most prominent feature that measures future success. Interviews conducted during the study with professionals in fields ranging from law, medicine, and journalism, indicates that “these individuals cited grit or a close synonym as often as talent,” even expressing wonder at the “commitment to their ambitions” (Duckworth et al. 1088). The immense amount of passion and commitment individuals demonstrate leaves a valuable impression on the employer, and it should show on resumes, interviews, and any other documents that express previous work experience. In another study by Dr. Duckworth and colleague at the University of Pennsylvania, Lauren Eskreis-Winkler, they try to find correlations between ‘grit’ and other factors that could influence the success of a person. To do this, they studied students at an Army Special Operations Force boot camp, and found that physical fitness and intelligence of the students had no correlation to grit (Eskreis-Winkler et al.). As well as this, throughout the study, they saw that students that expressed perseverance and passion increased their likelihood to graduate by 32% (Eskreis-Winkler et al.). Without perseverance and passion, people can lose the drive to improve and find solutions to problems thrown at them. It can also decrease their motivation to go out and find opportunities that allow them to gain relevant experience. Even though most people do not think about a military career, the study done also relates to other fields of study; medicine, law, engineering, and any other career possible.
