The process from paper to electronic is a lengthy and costly process that needs to be planned for with a lot of cooperation and assistance from everyone involved (George, Garth, Fish, & Baker, 2013). The reason why this topic was chosen as a development initiative to improve health care and patient outcome is because technology is becoming more and more part of normal life therefore, in time, will overtake paperwork with computer work. Why would health care and nursing be an exception to this development? Also, some hospitals have already made the transition into computerised notes and are making a trend for the other hospitals to follow. Kreidler (2015) state that patient privacy and confidentiality is the main motivation behind pushing the electronic clinical notes in hospitals and further development. This benefit is a major for the health sector as privacy and confidentiality is so important as there is a lot of personal information within patient’s clinical notes. Hoover (2016) also state that keeping health care information confidential, safe and private is a real challenge however, electronic clinical notes makes it easier and only allows people who have access to the notes to access them. There are many different legislations and policy that guide for the importance of privacy and confidentiality for patients accessing health care. The nursing code of conduct (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2012) has a section that relates specifically to respecting health consumer’s privacy and confidentiality, the Nursing Code of Ethics (New Zealand Nurses Organisation, 2010) also has a principle that is around confidentiality and privacy and lastly the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (Ministry of Health, 2003) has a section on confidentiality of health information.
