The imaging department consists of many integrated systems that all play a vital role in the operation of the unit. These systems include RIS/HIS systems, modality interfaces, PACS systems, and integrated work systems. The efficient image acquisition and workflow are essential in today 's radiologic environment. These systems will be reviewed and their importance discussed as they tie into the workflow of the radiology department.

The RIS is the primary system for the electronic management of imaging departments. "A RIS is especially useful for tracking radiology imaging orders and billing information" (Rouse, 2015). The primary functions can include patient scheduling, procedure billing, supports management reporting, examination performance tracking and interpretation and results distribution. The RIS complements the HIS and the PACS systems. The RIS is where the whole process begins.
After the patient has been registered and the order entry process is complete by the HIS, the RIS process will start scheduling the order to continue the flow of information. It is one of the core functions of the system. On the scheduling process, the necessary information is captured, so the right procedure is performed. The critical information needed includes patient demographics and any other information required to complete the billing process correctly before the procedures performed.
The scheduling process is a continuation of the order entry process, in which relevant information shall be treated so the system can add the requested procedure and maintain a list of the scheduled procedures and available spots.
