Rollo May Reflection

The author of the influential book Love and Will, Rollo May, inspires me as a teacher most when he states “Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.” Like Rollo May, I am a strong believer in the influence that good communication has on myself and the others around me. Communication is a major key to ensuring the success of my students, which ultimately brings success to me as a teacher. Communication between teachers, parents, administration and ultimately the community is required, as a whole. As a teacher, the success of your students, in your classroom and in life in general, depends on how well you communicate with these figures. Due to this assignment, I have thought of many ways to communicate with my students and even list some of those ways in the lesson plan. One of the main ways I plan on verbally communicating with my future students is to walk around and check on students while they are working on assignments. This allows me to see where exactly my students are at class work. Walking around to verbally communicate with students also allows students to ask me any questions that they may have that they do not feel comfortable asking in front of the class. This is a common fear that students have and most students will go without getting the answer to the question because they do not want to be embarrassed in front of the class. This form of communication eliminates that embarrassment. Also, in the lesson plan project, I illustrate a time when I will be standing in front of the class and explaining the assignment Those times in the lesson made me realize that the main nonverbal form of communication that I am going to be using are my stances and hand gestures. When in front of the classroom, I am going to try to always face my students, look relaxed, and smile, in order to ensure that my students understand that I am happy to be teaching them and that I care about their education. The concept behind this is to allow students to present their poems in a creative manner that can help them get over the nervousness that comes from having to stand in front of the classroom.
