It is important to stop what you are doing when a child is talking to listen, sometimes this can be challenging working as a teaching assistant as you have so much other responsibilities and jobs to get done, however when hearing a child read or they are talking to you, you must turn your body towards them and fully engage in the conversation so the child can feel valued and backs up the message you are listening. You can also ask questions that back up the child’s story, ‘ wow you swam 10m at the weekend’? This can help the child or young person keep the conversation going and learn good conversation techniques. Giving people enough time to form their thoughts and respond is very important, as they may not be used to adults wanting to communicate with them in their home lives. If their is a negative situation sometimes smiling at a child or young person can turn the situation around and present yourself as non-aggressive and then you can talk and work out a way forward if their has been an argument or disagreement. Responding in ways to gain more information is important as this creates two way communication and ensures it isn't all one
