The experience that immediately comes to mind that is sure to influence my academic work and goals at Colorado Christian University is spending my childhood, and into adolescent years, enduring life confined inside a polygamist colony, where education, especially education for females, is not only unimportant, but discouraged. Growing up in this oppressive environment, seemed so “safe and secure”, even desirable as a child; immersion in such an atmosphere felt, “normal” at such a naive stage. Everyone knew one another and, we all knew what was expected of ourselves and of each other. There was a rule for practically everything; if there was not a rule, one was sure to be crafted. I packed all of my belongings in garbage bags, tossed them out of my bedroom window and dragged them to a nearby ditch. In the dark I waited, wondering if she would follow through. Seeing the headlights of her little red Chevy Chevette brought feelings of both relief and distress. We speedily tossed my possessions in the car and disappeared in the night. With the support of my forever friend and her family, I went on to attain my High School Diploma and began working toward a college degree. My goal was to earn a Bachelor 's Degree and live happily ever after. I would like to report that it all went as planned, but life’s contests turned out to be crippling. Suddenly I was in the position of accepting custody of my sister who was only two years my junior while working and going to school full time. Taking on the charge of a troubled teenager became the dominating focus of my efforts. I abandoned school for a time, but later returned to gain my Associates Degree. Once I had plowed my way through that far, I had a son of my own, later a daughter and then another son. I now had children to tend to and the responsibility of making sure they secured their
