Deciding which college to go to is a difficult, but important decision to make. Education is an investment that determines your path. Careers are based upon the quality of your education. The type of institution that you attended in your late teens to early twenties may determine your stature in a company; it is the red flag deciding between an applicant that graduated from a local community college and an applicant that attended a well-known research university. Though it seems unfair to compare the two applicants because the decision can be made based upon financial status or others, the difference still stands and makes or breaks your job application. Research opportunities not only allow students to form connections with peers and professors, but also it exposes students to the scientific method including how hypotheses are formed at the research level and how research projects are designed and formatted. At the University of Michigan more than 15,000 students have been involved in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) since 1989, the year the program was established. There are over 1,000 undergraduate research opportunities open in nearly all fields of interest available on campus that facilitate the student entrepreneur grounds. The National Science Foundation ranked University of Michigan the number one U.S. public research university. At University of California at Berkeley, there is a selective, private program available to students known as Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) of which students have to apply to be involved. There are 62 programs available to choose from, however, multiple fields of interest are covered in those programs; meaning, students could be potentially be working with students with a diverse range of interests.
