I was sort of homeschooled up until I was 9. My parents did not want me in the public school system because of the continuing rise of immorality in the schools, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, and the decline of the education system in the United States. Even so my parents did not do much better teaching me. I would have to say though its partly my own fault I often gave my mother a hard time in every possible way a kid could think of like for example I would burn some of the homework my mom gave me, or even throw it out the window and slack off even just simply say no I don’t want to do it (I was very stubborn) similar to the dog ate the homework type of things. They gave up after much toil with me when I was around 8 or 9 to my great enjoyment

Because of this I thought I was too dumb, and that it was hopeless. That led to something like a mental barrier against learning. It wasn’t all bad though, I learned how beneficial reading good books are when I was really young, because of my father he would often read and I would watch him and he would always be happy when he was reading it got me curios on why so I started reading myself and discovered how powerful they can be, its beauty, its imaginative nature. At one point I even figured out how to not care what people say, about me as long as I try to do the best I can. Here is a good quote from a friend of mine (I don’t know where he got it) “keep trying until you succeed even if you fail a few times. I could not walk for months all I could do was play computer games or read. I chose reading because I could use this opportunity with no distractions to advance my knowledge further. But I still had no way of telling if what I was learning was sufficient for college. Then an old bishop of mine mentioned pathway why I can’t say for sure but I think he saw potential in my sister and even with our lack of knowledge in many areas. He would often say we were smarter then many kids he has seen in the public schools but I never believed him until I got in seminary I ended up being the best in class I was astonished I guess that was the major start of the uphill climb for me to a better future nevertheless when he mentioned pathway I really got excited, I knew that this was the perfect way to find out my weakest areas to make them stronger even if it meant failing. I learned a few new things, gained confidence it felt like that mental barrier is crumbling down I am overjoyed and never thought it could be done. Now I know because of pathway even as I’m writing this that my weakest area is in fact writing and that’s ok. It has been a real struggle for me. That just means time to work harder if I want to continue growing. That being said, when I looked back there were many times that I had a problem, God was there to help me rediscover myself.
