As undergraduate students, we believe ambition and determination are the two most prevalent qualities needed to establish and accomplish our goals. We also believe that education is the foundation for a better community. Application is the first step in working towards a goal, and the first step we took in becoming students here at San Diego State. Unfortunately, this step is not as obvious – or realizable – for many high school students living in lower income neighborhoods. These students simply do not receive the same guidance and resources as their competitors. Public high schools can have one guidance counselor to manage the academic development for up to 1000 students. Thirty-eight percent of San Diego State 's undergraduates are …show more content…
This national student organization was created to give high school students receive an equal education about college. This includes: picking the right university for the individual, picking the major that suits their personality, and helping them realize other avenues when it comes to financial aid. The Strive for College website provides statistics that shows the differences in advertising college in both public and private high schools. The private school, expectedly advertise college twice as much as public high schools. This program provides public school students with a chance to receive the same information about college. They also mention how in public schools, there is only one counselor for every thousand students, which makes it very likely that the counselor is not able to help them to the extent that every student deserves. Through this mentorship, the mentee will be able to gain insight in many aspects of a college student’s life as well as learn how to take the steps in order to become a college student. It is a once a week mentorship that is only about one hour which makes it very manageable for even the busiest college …show more content…
Through the use of SDSU student volunteers within the Strive for College chapter, prospective and incoming students get experienced counseling from people who have already been in their shoes and gone through the scheduling rushes which many school counselors don’t mention or haven’t experienced. Additionally this rise in available mentors broadens a student’s opportunities at receiving this kind of one on one help as many public schools attain only one counselor per 1000 students making it nearly impossible to receive constant and personalized help. Aside from these opportunities prospective and incoming students also enjoy the social benefits of early networking with higher level students which help their educational goals but may also result in long term business connections crucial in today’s
