Reflective Essay On Who I Am Today

My upbringing like many others has helped shape me into who I am today. My family and I are members of the middle or working class. Both of my parents have two jobs and I have had a job since I was sixteen and legally allowed to work. This has impacted my life because it taught me how to value what I have and the process that it takes to get what I have. I am the first person to go to college in my family, and my parents have sacrificed their time and money to help me attend college. This has led me to strive to do the best that I can in college and every other aspect of my life.
I attended Calvary Baptist Church Academy, which is a Christian school. I went to this school from kindergarten until high school graduation. The school integrated

The racism has taken place within my family mostly. However, my family has experienced it together in public places, which has involved several types of people. It is a public issue because other minorities experience racism as well. Another problem that I have encountered recently deals with transgender issues. One of my former coworkers recently started the transition to becoming a man. This caused a problem because he started to block and ignore the people in his life. This opened my eyes to the struggle that transgender people have in their transition. This is a public issue because most transgender people are misunderstood in society and I think people need to be more willing to understand what others go through. I have also become a supporter for Planned Parenthood funding as it is being threated. This is a public issue because the people that protest Planned Parenthood mostly do not understand the services that the organization offers. I believe that Planned Parenthood is important because it provides support for women that may not be able to afford a regular doctor’s visit, which might make them a high-risk …show more content…
One part of the article that I found interesting was the discussion of the “Negro Motorist Green Book.” According to DeCourcey (2017), The book “provided places that were welcoming to blacks as they made their way through the segregated country.” I found this interesting because it seems that history may come full circle again because the NAACP issued a travel warning in June for minorities traveling to Missouri. In the TIME magazine article by Emma Talkoff (2017), “Chapel says that the advisory is a unique tool for making people aware of these events and giving them the opportunity to ‘simply decide what level they want to participate in.’ He believes it’s part of the NAACP’s ‘duty’ to call attention to what he sees as increased risk for discrimination in the state.” I found the connection to the past both interesting and

My parents value education and they know that in other to have a better future, the first step is having an education. My mom would say that “working at McDonalds would not help pay the bills, put food on the table, and do everything that you want to. You have to go to school. You don’t want to live paycheck to paycheck for the rest of your life.” My parents’ values and beliefs help me choose the path that I’m on now.…

Planned Parenthood should not lose any funding or be shut down. Despite recent abortion controversies, Planned Parenthood should not be held responsible for pro-abortion advocates. The organization is pro-choice, and intends to give the choice back to the people in order to allow them to choose a better life for themselves. If Planned Parenthood loses its funding or gets shut down, people everywhere, but especially low-income families, will be put in a difficult standing in affordable health care and wellness. Furthermore, shutting down Planned Parenthood would put many people at a greater health risk than they have now, and worst yet, it will not end abortion.…

Imagine a world where a small group of people could destroy a nation-wide organization with slanderous lies. If the Republicans in Congress get their way, Americans wouldn’t have to imagine. Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides many essential health services for both men and women. Not only do these services directly benefit millions of people, but the scientific advancements made possible by Planned Parenthood have improved the lives of many more.…

By preventing Planned Parenthood from receiving federal money, it means people with government funded health care cannot use it for the services provided at the clinics. Many people do not know the exact statistics of the services Planned Parenthood provide, and because of that they may have skewed ideas of the clinic. Without federal funding Planned Parenthood patients who use government provided health care would have to pay for all of the services of the clinic out of their own pocket (Bassett). For people with private health care, this would not be an issue, but for others who lack the money to pay for private health care, they may be in trouble. Planned Parenthood has said that two-thirds of their patients are “low-income and have no other primary health care provider” (Bassett).…

The reason I have come to be who I am today has to do with the experiences I have had and the decisions I have made . The first being my decision to leave my family, pack my bags and begin a life much different than what it would have been if I had stayed and not left for India. I decided to complete my pre collegiate studies in India when I was in third grade because I missed older sister; the other reason was because to me India had always been a vaction spot where I sipped on coconut water, shopped for elboratly beaded attire and feasted like a Raja(King)! My mom was not very found of the idea of two out of her three daughters staying half way acoss world but she came to terms with it eventually.…

Women’s rights has been an issue in the United States since the early 1800’s and until all people are comfortable discussing the fact that in many parts of the world, women have no say in what they can do with their bodies or how it’s treated. A woman should be the only one who can decide what is best for her body. There is only so much that women can do when the one place that helps women with checkups and abortion based questions, Planned Parenthood, is being defunded or closed down. “The House of Representatives is expected to pass a budget reconciliation bill that guts the Affordable Care Act, pulls roughly $450 million in federal assistance from Planned Parenthood and prevents Medicaid recipients from getting reimbursed…
