Throughout our educational career we are often told, “Always study, don’t stop going to school, listen to your teachers and do what they tell you to do” because education is important and without it we would work at Mc Donald’s for the rest of our lives. But if we only listen and do what we are told to do don’t we become machines? Education should be used to help us critically think and open our mind to the information that is out there, to make us strong leaders and not weak followers. I have a seven-year-old sister, whom is very smart. She likes to learn new things every day, by asking questions and always keeping a very open mind; she has always been this way and since she began school it has always been a problem between home and her …show more content…
One of the classes last semester that I enjoyed very much was Honors 111, our professor was very nice and always found a way to involve the students in his lectures, mostly discussion. At least to me, he helped me open my mind about the issues that happen around the globe, to think outside the box, to see farther than the news lead us to believe. I believe the honors college uses the problem-posing education or as Freire mentioned “The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach”(Freire, pg.324 P.1). This semester my classes continue to meet my expectations if not exceed them, I feel like I am able to learn without having to sit in front of a book and memorize a chapter verbatim. Some educators like to feel powerful and want to dominate the students with their information, however in the year 2016 with all this civic movements, and the future presidential elections we as a society cannot afford to let educators govern our mind, we must go further, for example learn on our own grab a couple of books get together with friends and recreate the lecture in a way that everyone understands the “why, what and how”, we must fight for the freedom of our mind.
